winter 14ers.com gathering  Sucess!

rough day on silverheels!

gaining the summit wasn't too rough for winter. winds kicked up high on the mountain, yet that's expected. the return trip has tons of uphill and 40-45mph winds in whiteout conditions made travel, and seeing, quite challenging. memorable experience.

Hoosier Pass/North Spur  Sucess!

14ers.com Winter Gathering climb. I don't think Silverheels has ever seen so many feet in winter!

Hoosier Pass  Sucess!

Climbed with folks from 14ers.com. What a slog! Third winter attempt, the winds blew hard as usual, but I was not to be denied this time. 3rd times the charm, whiteout conditions be damned!!! =)

Hoosier Pass/North Spur  Sucess!

Fun solo day. Only ran into one other party on the way down, and they turned around when I got to them.

Hoosier Pass  Sucess!

Summited on a blustery day, with a group from 14ers.com. A nice outing, though not a mountain I'm going to return to climb anytime soon. Oh, and skis are worthless on this peak.

up in the clouds  Sucess!

Camped at Beaver Creek crossing for an early start. Great weather until valley between point 12,282 and summit when clouds, mist, brought visibility down to maybe 25yds. I knew I needed to cross or pass by point 13,004, but never found it in the fog. My GPS read 13,300 so I knew I had only 500 feet to go. Because this was my first trip on this mountain, I was a little confused about exact summit location. Mist and clouds dissapated on the way down and the lay of the ridges and high points became clear. No summit register available. 9-7-07

South Ridge  Sucess!

Fantastic day. Other peaks (e.g. Quandary, North Star) were socked in with weather, but a hole in the clouds above Silverheels allowed sunlight to shine upon us. Relaxing lunch and sunbathe at summit. Climbing Partners: Maryann & Janet plus two strangers from New Mexico. No one else anywhere near the mountain.

South Ridge solo  Sucess!

Was planning on starting at the standard trailhead to get the extra miles in but Beaver Creek was a little to deep for me to feel comfortable crossing in 35 degree temps at 6:00am. Took the jeep across the creek and up to the 4WD TH. Saw the huge Elk heard that is in the area several times on the ascent and descent - close to 100 animals with a lot of calves - a good sign! FYI - The entire South Ridge route is now clear of snow.

Route Climbed: Hoosier Pass/Hoosier Ridge/North Spur  Sucess!

By staying on the ridge top the entire day I was able to get plenty of altitude and stray away from the avalanche cornices on Hoosier Ridges south slopes. Great solo day. Conditions are great on Hoosier Ridge. Snowshoes needed to treeline.

Long day in the snow, fierce wind, and cold. Great views of the peaks in the Mosquito Range.

My God! The wind was just absolutely terrible! One of the worst "wind days" I've ever had. Good views of South Park & Fairplay.

Route Climbed: Hoosier Pass/Hoosier Ridge/North Spur Date Climbed: January 6, 2005  Sucess!

Started out from Hoosier Pass at 8:30 (later than originally intended), then snowshoed up to the ridge and around to the north spur, climbed it to the summit ridge in probably 50 mph winds. Leaning into them, they held us up from falling. Then we descended the NW ridge, climbed over heartbreak hill and back up onto Hoosier Ridge, descending back to the pass, getting to the car about 5pm. Took a little longer than I thought it would, but I had a great time on this winter hike.

Silverheels is a great hike with absolutely none of the crowds you'll find across the valley. The views are amazing.

Got a couple cool pics at the summit with Pacific Peak in the background. Hope I can find 'em...
