Skokomish via Lake of the Angels
Day hike to climb Skokomish with Dima R, who also climbed Stone.
Seems more people climbed/climbing Stone this weekend.
Traversed the scree higher on the way in, and much lower on the way out. Both not the best, nor too bad.
The rocks are okay on the top. Almost slate like. But not too crumbly.
Quite a few water source along the trail to the lake.
Above the lake, there was a small snow field below the scree traverse, which we walked on on the way back, and I fetched some snow to cool down my water.
Saw a young black bear below the lake.
Saw Olympic Bluebell on the rocks near the top of Skokomish.
A beautiful area, fun scramble.
Trail from the road up is steep at times. There's even a rope to aid at one point, which I didn't use.

Impatience gets punished
My goal was to get up Skokomish and be back in Olympia by noon. Left my car at Putvin TH at 5, ran up to Lake of Angels in a hour and a half, and started up the boulder strewn gully above the lake. I did very little research on this one, but knew the general area. At the saddle above Lake of Angels, I knew I had to sidehill a bit then go up. I got impatient and turned uphill much too soon. I went up a small gully and found myself on the NE summit. Rather than backtracking, I traversed the top thinking it might get easier. I got to the SW face of this summit and chose to downclimb to where I could see the correct route. There were some very sketchy class 5 moves and I'm a little disturbed thinking back on it. With luck, I made it back to the route. Knowing I was at least near the correct summit, I shot up a little early again and got to the knife-edge ridge just below the top. I had to scoot along the ridge with sharp, vertically aligned shale up my butt and hundreds of feet of nothing on either side. With cut-up hands I finally made it to the top by 8:10. I only stayed at the top for 10 minutes. Went down the correct way and got back to the car at 10:45. Not my smartest day, but still enjoyable.

Better than expected
I put this one off for several years thinking it would be too hard for a day hike. Turned out to be much easier than expected, similar to Mt. Stone. Snow starting at the first basin, Lake of the Angels just starting to melt... from the 5700 ft pass the snow on the SE face made the traverse over to the base of the summit block a breeze by covering up most of the dreaded loose choss. One of the best views from any summit in the Olympics I've seen. 7 hours 40 minutes car to car. Trip report here.

Lake of Angels Route
Great day trip from Lake of the Angels. Ascended to the notch, dropped down to scree and traveled along the slope before climbing up to the summit. Exciting scramble near the summit; don't cut up to the ridge too soon! Ran into a friendly herd of goats on the return trip
Hiked in and set up camp on top of the ridge above lake of the angels. Took a day trip to haggen lake and twinged my knee in the process. It was still sore the next day, but I wasnt leaving without bagging skokomish. Traversed out to the south peak and scooted up it in the blazing sunshine. Spent a good chunk of the beautiful afternoon there enjoying the view. Fun all around easy climb
Back in 1989 I climbed Mt Skokomish with my father-in-law and husband. Our intention was to climb up to Lake of the Angels and be satisfied, but the mountain called to me. Fabulous and fun.

Loose ScrambleI saw 10 goats, 4 frogs, and a snake. The scramble was very loose, but what do you expect from the Olympics?

Acres of flowers.Easy summit. Great view of Mt. Cruiser. Dayhike from Putvin Trail. Want to revisit on a loop hike out of Staircase.

Another Oly Front Range PeakClimbed another of the Olympic mtns visible from the Sound. Lots of up for a not very high mtn (like all the Olympics).
