Route Climbed: Standard Route Date Climbed: August 21, 2005  Sucess!

Failed once last year on this and came back for another try. Made quick time up the road and up the first gully. Lavender Col is a lot of loose dirt and scree and it's better to stay farther left if you can as there is more solid talus. The 2nd gully is easy and the V-notch is overrated as a move. We made the summit in about 3 hours.

Nice hike/scramble with Chris. Easy, but fun, and extremely scenic.

First anniversary excursion for novice hikers turned out to be the one that hooked us! We hiked from just above Camp Bird Mine after taking our VW rabbit as high as we could get it. Incredible wildflowers and then the view from the top...

Went back this summer (near our 16th anniversary) and got within striking distance at the trailhead with our 6- and 9-year olds, but will have to wait a year to get them back to the top...

Route Climbed: Lavender Col - Yankee Boy Basin Date Climbed: Aug 6 2005  Sucess!

My sons, Troy & Patrick along with Molly the mt mutt, climbed Mt Sneffels on a rainy cloudy morning. We were the first to summit unless the two before us climbed it in one hour. If they did then we were the second to summit. We were on the summit alone which is unusal for Sneffels. We could not get a view of anything but clouds. The scree was bothersome but what's new. I'm sure glad they did all those improvements on the trail. This is Molly's second and my third time. Pat's & Troy's first. No register on the summit.

The day started out with a steady drizzle but finally let up around 9am. The Lavender Col route was a bit muddy so we stayed to the side on the rocks as much as possible. There are spots of snow in convienent places for an occasional snowball....

It was a great climb, the clouds even lifted every now and then to let us see the surrounding area.

One problem though.....There was no summit log. We searched around for it and no luck. Lots of pens had fallen under the summit cairn, but no log.

If you climb this route, watch out for excessive erosion on the way up to the saddle. Try to stay on the bigger rocks and not slide down the fine stuff.

Second ascent of Sneffels, but the first by this route. This was one of the best 14er routes I've ever done. Snow was perfect and the weather cooperated until I was off the summit. Great Route!

This is probably my favorite 14'er climb to date other than Crestone Peak. Tremendous views with an incredible amount of snow persisting in June. With stable snow, this is a great late spring climb. See my trip report.

Beautiful Hike. Clouds enclosed us the whole way to the top, then pow! The clouds opened up, and you could see for miles. The lakes down below were crystal blue, it was amazing. On the way down it started to rain, then lighting. The drive back to the campground we saw water ripping through side canyons, you definately don't want to be on that road up through yankee boy basin through a really bad rain storm or you might get washed way down into the river. Although that water was eye catching to watch explode through those canyons.

Had a mini suv with little clearance so, we parked at the parking area below the TH. A thunder storm quickly came in, but literally lasted only 5 minutes, and we had clear weather the remainder of the hike. Once on the summit, we saw 2 other storms in the distance so, we took a few quick snapshots and immediately headed down. Gorgeous mountain, gorgeous hike, wish we could have remained on the summit longer....

A very quick climb from the TH, with minimal exposure. And for those seeking more fun, don't go up the SE col, climb the ridgeline next to it for Class 3 fun. Wish I had a 4x4, so I wouldn't have had to hike from the Camp Bird Mine.

Molly the mountain mutt and I left the trailhead (12,000 ft) at about 7 am. Reached Lavender Col about 8:30 and the summit about 10:30. I know, I'm slow but I had to help molly. She can go up places she can't go down. She did quiet well until we got to the excape notch in the couloir. I needed to boost her through. We spent about 20 minutes on top taking pictures, drinking water, eating trail mix, signing the register etc. This is one of the best view summits around. Getting down was easy after getting to the coulier but I had to help Molly 5 times to get there. The new and improved trail half way up the scree to the Col is great. Got back to the TH about noon.

Easy to see why this is mountain is on most people's top ten list. It has everything for climbing, from scrambling to the technical-only north face. And it's a nice mountain to look at. And has a nice view on top. And (unless you're doing the north face) you have to go through Yankee Boy flowers to start.

I've done the mountain several times, with Aaron and Ellen, and--good for him!--my brother Chet's only fourteener; and other people I don't remember at the moment.

Something about Sneffels gives it an immediacy and personality staying with you even after you're long off, and doing other things. Right on, I say!
