Mono Pass
With Rob after camping at Mills Lake previous 2 night. Hid our packs near Ruby lake, made our way up to Mono pass and then tagged the summit.

Having never been to Mono Pass or on Starr, why not take a quick trip and check out snow conditions. Yes, lots of fresh snow up there! Made south summit just as winds picked up and it began to snow. Class 3 boulders covered in a few inches of snow was just not COOL man!

Mono Pass a special sight
Ambret went 40' higher and claimed success, so I guess I can't, but it sure felt like I was at the top of the mountain. Starr's a nice climb but what made this day special was the sight of pack trains wending their way through the snow, the windswept barren terrain and deep blue lake at Mono Pass, which gave the scene the feel of the Old West.

Summited Starr with friends Brian and Bruce. Beautiful walk up the Little Lakes Valley and past Ruby Lake. Mono Pass still had snow, but it was possible to stay on sand and rock most of the way up. Some fun rock scrambling toward the top of the mountain. Fantastic views from the summit. A very enjoyable hike.

east face
did not realize the mono pass route so did my own version. just go directly to the east face on snow. ice axe and crampons were used. i believe it was a class 3.
From the pack station toured out the road until below the second gully from the north. High winds and icy conditions made a trip to the summit and a ski descent of the gullies unappealing. The north face had picked up all the windblown powder however, making for a superb descent directly back to the car.

Summit Confusion
Nice warmup hike before doing Morgan. Spent too much time going back and forth between the E/W summits twice trying to decide which one was higher and searching in vain for a register.
Ascended south summit from Mono pass first - would have been much easier to go halfway down to Summit lake and up the chute next to the North (true) summit.
Great views of Morgan, BCS, Abbot, Red&White, Red Slate, Pioneer Basin, and Little Lakes Valley.

Mono Pass
This was fun one with good views. I just remember getting to the summit alone, but then coming down Mono Pass it was a lot more of a traffic jam then I expected. I was waiting for the "passing lanes" when I found myself behind a single line of 15 people. ;)
As others have said, the true summit is definitely hard to distinguish. When I was on the South summit I thought the North summit looked a bit higher, but when I got to the North summit the South summit looked higher! Either way, the views are pretty good for less than half a days effort.

Peak climbed on the way to 4th Recess Lake
Pretty easy trip summit off of Mono Pass on our way to camp at gorgeous 4th recess lake. Provided a good view back at Rock Creek.

West slope
from Mono Pass. Sand surfed down the southeast slop in a jiffy!
Fun class 2 climb from Mono Pass. We headed for the ridge as early as we could. It was my second time up the peak both via the same route. We were hoping for Abbot but ominous clouds at 7am encouraged us to switch destinations when we got to Ruby Lake.

From Mono Pass
Nice hike up to Mono Pass with a stop at Ruby Lake on the way. There was snow for a hundred yards or so below the pass, but a solo packer had gone up and his tracks showed the way. I postholed at one point and scraped my leg pretty good on a hidden boulder. Despite the blood, I was happy because I knew that could have been a lot worse. From the pass, I headed up to the nearest highpoint, but that obviously wasn't the summit. At least it got me out of that awful sand and I took my time enjoying the ridge traverse over to what finally turned out to be the real summit. Found the register wedged in the granite in, of all things, a beef jerky bag. I was the second one of the day to sign in, but also only the second one in 2008. I suspect that has more to do with the difficulty with figuring out the actual high point and then locating the register in what looks like litter... Smoky day from all the fires, but is there really a bad day in the Sierra. The 13k peaks around the Little Lakes Valley were beautiful nonetheless. Dropped down the chute directly below the summit and ended up hitting a boulder under some scree and falling on my ass and bruising my tailbone. Didn't expect to get bruised and bloodied on this one, of all peaks, but all in all it was a great day.

Mono PassAs others have said, the true summit is definitely hard to distinguish. When I was on the South summit I thought the North summit looked a bit higher, but when I got to the North summit the South summit looked higher! Either way, the views are pretty good for less than half a days effort.
