Larvitour Stop #35  Sucess!

"Beautiful desolation" is how I described this high point to my friends. You get there, and there's nothing but you, the display, and the emptiness...

Fun Stop on State High Point Roadtrip  Sucess!

A long way from home, Mount Sunflower was a must see for Chris and I on our State High Point Road Trip to Taos, NM. Enjoyed seeing the Free Little Library and a shady little spot to sit. We left a nice cold Black Butte Porter in the Mailbox. Next stop will be Black Mesa, Ok.

Roadtrip  Sucess!

I'm not really a highpointer but I wanted to visit this out of the way place on a little weekend roadtrip. This place has its own beauty and I am glad to have visited. Off to OK to hike Black Mesa next.

3 AM Arrival  Sucess!

I was planning to do this right around sunrise before thunderstorms were predicted to hit later in the day. Unfortunately it began to rain lightly at 1 AM and not wanting to take any chances with the road getting muddy, I immediately set out to get to the highpoint. Made it to the monument a 3 AM, with it windy, foggy, dark, and rainy. After 5 minutes, I moved on out.

Super foggy  Sucess!

Super freaking foggy and cloudy. Drizzly and cold. Only one there with no view (no surprise). Hiked across the ranch to tag the State Line HP. Actually needed GPS in order to not get lost.

Sunflowers Everywhere  Sucess!

The flash of rain which came a couple hours south of Mt. Sunflower did not make it to the dirt roads, thank goodness. We passed many fields of sunflowers coming and going from Mt. Sunflower, which was quite fitting.

The owners added a Free Public Library under a covered area next to the highpoint. Cool idea!

Registration box is full of hats, t-shirts, and other gifts. We added a Threadgill's shirt for Austin, Texas. Fun stop.

High Point #23  Sucess!

Visited this great HP with Kate on the way to Steve's wedding in Colorado later this same day. We loved the tiny library at the summit!

Almost didn't make it ...  Sucess!

Seriously ... Part of a three state Memorial Day vacation "dash." Came in from the north (Kanorado) and even with a Jeep just about went into the ditch twice due to the "gumbo" on the roads. The area had received almost 3" of rain the 2 days before and made the N-S travel close to impossible on the dirt roads. Spent $15 hosing the mud off the car in the next town. Crazy but true! Kudos to the guy on his bike that had ridden from Flagstaff, AZ.

Rough Hike  Sucess!

One of the tougher summits in Kansas. Thankful that I made it up

Snowy Day at Mt Sunflower

The roads were good down the dirt road to Mt. Sunflower, but it was cold and windy. Despite this being a relatively flat summit, the vast expanse of the surrounding plains is pretty amazing for someone from the East like me. I would recommend if you're going through Kansas to make the stop.

HP #12  Sucess!

Arrived 1.5 hrs after sunset. Strong wind made for a chilly "climb". Google's gps was right on, took some nice pics in the dark but didn't linger due to the biting cold. Lots of UFOs in the sky

Road Trip!  Sucess!

Nice day drive out from Golden CO. I blew it and used my truck's GPS system for directions rather than the Summitpost beta. A little more scenic than I planned! Barbed wire fence gates and cows!

If I recall this one was in the middle of nowhere but the spot was marked with a cool metal sunflower.

Nice spot!  Sucess!

Delightful, peaceful place with amazing cloud formations. 90 degrees and a bit buggy with flies during our visit. The covered picnic table made a nice lunch spot. #39 for me, #26 for Lillian, #10 for John, #9 for Barb. Fun road trip!
