Was visiting my Grandma one of the last times I saw her in Goodland, KS. We took a short drive to Mt. Sunflower. Here's a link to the trip report.

Fueled by Caffeine & Sunflower Seeds  Sucess!

State Highpoint #4

Summited same day as Black Mesa in OK, part of a marathon drive.

Became frustrated with muddy gravel roads in my little Hyundai, but worth it to bag the state highpoint. Parked at entry, watched sunset, signed register. Fun developments by landowner. Kansas is definitely flatter than Nebraska.

No one around for miles, great to have that silence and solitude.

Kudos to the owners  Sucess!

Here in awful spring weather, but the owners' attention to the HP is worth the drive to get there.

Easy Grab  Sucess!

Drive to top. It is amazing how flat Kansas really is.

First Highpoint of the Day  Sucess!

Left Denver around 5 AM to reach Mt. Sunflower before heading down to Black Mesa, the Oklahoma highpoint. The directions listed in Charlie and Diane Winger's book Highpoint Adventures are better and shorter than the ones listed on SP.

Highpoint 9

Read my trip report. It was a beautiful day. Flat but still awesome.

Mt. Sunflower  Sucess!

Myself and Diane, along with her daughter, Elisia and my son, Alex made the "summit" and logged the Kansas high point. Kansas is pretty in its own unique way.

The giant sunflower and creative summit register make it worth the effort to get to the top of this state high point.

Well, I drove all the way to the summit in my midsize compact rental car. The sun was setting and I wished to hang out, but I noticed that two truck were parked at the cattle guard (and I had the distinct impression that they were waiting to make sure that I left), so I stayed only a short while. (Sure enough, as I got into my car they started to drive off.)

On the summit is a picnic table with a covering above and a fence around it. A great place to get away from cattle and sun.

There are few trees in this area that are not growing around the homes or along the creeks, so all is very exposed. You can see several homes around "Mount" Sunflower, including the owners home, and they can see you.

This is a greta place for Bird watching, and there are lots of birds of prey.

Thanks to the owners for allowing strangers to come onto their property.

Windy but sunny with clear skies. Nice picnic bench and marker. Extremely flat, but otherwise a nice HP.

My third state highpoint. The owners have gone to some trouble to make the long drive worth it.

You've got to be kidding me? Somebody went to the trouble of creating a Mt. Sunflower page. [shaking head] Even worse, I've gone to the trouble of signing the summit log.

My wife and I drove here after summiting Mt. Humphreys in AZ. Another "high-point" down. Was amazed at how many other people had been there that day. The view was unique and grand in a different way. God is so diverse in His creation.

Loved it! The view, the wind, the high plains, and that funky marker make this one very whimsical and fun.

That was the most strenuous climb that I have ever experienced in all of my expeditions. No, really....had a great time. One more high point down!
