What a hike...from the car to the maibox
The owners take good care of the road and the site.
One other visitor was just leaving as I drove up. StHP #10
#1 03-31-22 W/ Lana Got here about 5:30 pm after having started the day in a rental car from the Denver Int'l Airport and after visiting the Nebraska HP, Panorama Point. Enjoyed the little library and we left a beer for the owner of the property. Drove back to Burlington, CO to spend the night at the very nice Best Western Carousel Inn on South Lincoln Street.
Flew from SLC to Denver. Drove to Panorama Point in Nebraska and then on to Mount Sunflower in Kansas. Tomorrow we will hike Black Mesa in Oklahoma.
Nice diversion on the drive to Colorado. I didn’t know about the suggestion to leave the owner a beer until I was already there empty handed.
We were glad it hadn't rained so we had no issues driving our rental car out to the highpoint. We parked at the bottom of the final stretch and walked.
Gate was closed because of the heavy snow, so walked over to the high point. Had to clear some of the snow to grab a picture, but worth it.
Drove the Magic Bus to the summit on this one. Great time. Middle of nowhere!!!
Flew to Denver, spent the night in Burlington, CO, then visited Mount Sunflower the next morning. Directions made it easy to find. Highpoint # 36 for me.
I was successful.
The grasslands have their own special charm.
Cold blustery day in Western Kansas, 37° and blowing rain, occasional flurries. It is a great day for HighPointing!
This was the 8th Highpoint in 5 days over an extended Labor day weekend:
1. Ohio's Campbell Hill
2. Indiana's Hoosier High Point
3. Missouri's Taum Sauk
4. Illinois' Charles Mound
5. North Dakota's White Butte
6. South Dakota’s Black Elk Peak
7. Nebraska’s Panorama Point
8. Kansas’ Mt Sunflower
Came down from I-70 @ exit 1. Dusty road but not much washboarded. Shorter drive on gravel down to US-40 - would recommend coming and going that way.
It's down a dirt road about 10 miles in the middle of miles of corn fields. Nice place.
What a climb, I tell ya what
After being chased off of private property attempting to do a county high point in Colorado earlier in the day, this was a lovely consolation prize. State high point number six for me! Mount Sunflower was a beautiful place to be, isolated from other folks during a global pandemic.
Nothing but peace at this highpoint!
The owners of this highpoint do a great job of making it fun. I enjoyed it.
The way was well-marked. Highpoint is on private property. Bring a beer and leave it in the register box for the landowner.
