Taylor Made  Sucess!

From Gooseberry, 20 degrees F at start but no wind, and a breathtakingly beautiful blue sky and brilliant sun. Took a little over 2 hours up, 40 degrees at summit. I lost the trail on the last mile going down due to inattention and had to retrace steps. If you see the stock tanks as I did, you are off trail. 55 degrees at end with a breeze.

Mount Taylor - Navajo Sacred Mountain  Sucess!

Summitted sacred mountain. I am after the four scared mountains to the Navajo. I will be one of the few Navajo's that will summit all four.

From saddle at 10565  Sucess!

I drove up FR-453 to the saddle between Taylor and La Mosca and camped there. The last couple of miles were rocky and bumpy but I didn't need to use 4WD. From the saddle I hiked Taylor via the Gooseberry Trail (1.9 miles roundtrip) and then La Mosca via the road (1.7 miles roundtrip).

An Ascent of Tsoodził  Sucess!

Enjoyed a morning hike of Tsoodził the day after hiking Wheeler Peak. We used the Gooseberry Springs trail. The trail is gradual and delivers amazing views of the surrounding landscape. Beautiful weather after a night of rain.

Mount Taylor via Trail 02421

Hiked via trail 02421 and then took the Gooseberry Trail up the north side of Mount Taylor. We then hiked down the west ridge to hit Forest Service Road 453E to get back to Trail 02421. The entire trail had 4-6” of snow with drifts up to 12”. Definitely could have used some snowshoes.

Mount Taylor Hike  Sucess!

We had a great hike to Mount Taylor via the Gooseberry Trail. Took us a little over three hours. The views were phenomenal! Weather was great although it got pretty windy on the switchback section. All in all conditions were great.

Took the first turn for 193  Sucess!

I took the first turn for 193, which left me several miles short of the Gooseberry TH when the road got impassable to passenger cars. Fortunately I was able to road walk the distance, but it made a relatively short hike quite lengthy. Five hours up and four hours down, with a little bushwhacking to cut the road walk a bit short on the way back. Fresh snowfall and iffy weather made it a brisk day but the trail was well laid out and quite pleasant.

Re: Took the first turn for 193

I wish I would have seen this post before we went because we did the exact same thing. The road did not look muddy but about a mile in it turned really slick. Found a place to turn around but instead of turning back we just parked and hiked up the road for a few hours while waiting for the road to dry. No way should anything but a high clearance vehicle be on this section of FR 193. We were in a Suburban.

Did scout out the real trailhead and will hike it another time - the second right turn for FR 193 up 547 a few more miles.

Short Hike  Sucess!

Hiked it from The Water Canyon Trailhead (google that) by the CDT. Easy pace made it up in less than an hour. Return trip <30 minutes. Trail is in good condition and very easily followed though there are no markers directing you to the summit per se. subjective distance is less than 1 mile. Great views from the summit, but the hike is mainly in forest right to the summit.

Short route  Sucess!

Took the shorter trail to the top from the saddle at the top of FS453 in between La Mosca overlook and Mount Taylor. Only about .75 mile one way. So quick up and back down but then drove FS239 all the way from Mount Taylor northeast to SAN Luis and US550.

Gooseberry Springs  Sucess!

Loved this mountain, this is a great hike to share with your dogs. Spent over an hour on top - ate lunch, did yoga, etc. great chat with some local folks from Acoma.

The camping here is so quiet and serene. We drive just a bit past the trailhead to camp and never saw another vehicle the entire rest of the weekend!

Blue Bead Mountain  Sucess!

Headed up the wrong FR 193, make sure you make the turn all the way to where the pavement ends. Regardless, left Gooseberry trailhead at 10:30 A.M., summited at noon. Beautiful and quiet hike, nothing too strenuous but the second half is a decent work out. Terrific views, ran into some guy on his 4 wheel drive up there.
