Watched a thunderstorm build up over crater lake as I went up. Awesome peak, I'll climb this one again.

Lightening Rod of The Cascades
This is one of those climbs that you can do without a rope, but you kind of wished you had one halfway up, and especially to rap down on. Great climb - very small summit with 6 people on it.
Had a fantastic time climbing, managed to get a group of 9 up and down safely. Set a fixed line on the way up and used a second rope for a rap down. Fantastic weather for the majority of the day with a couple of clouds rolling over the summit as we descended the scree. Even with a 7AM start there were plenty of people in line to head up the summit block, ended up taking an extra couple of hours beyond the estimated round trip time.

West Ridge
Dan Butler and I made our first climb of Mt. Thielsen. Made a quick trip down to climb before the fall rainy season kicked in.
Nice climb and good rock on the summit pinnacle. Rain on our way home.

Polar Opposites
Tried this on June 10, 2009 and was caught in a snow/hail storm along the ridge. Came back One month later to a successful summit off of an alpine start (immediately after a full days work and full night's drive down from Portland) on what would become a 104 degree day.

Awesome climbing, great views
Thielsen was the last climb I did while I was working for the Forest Service in the Umpqua National Forest. Climbed with my buddies from the Botany department and our other friend, who happened to be doing Wilderness Patrol that day. We got good beta, so we didn't bring a rope or any pro, none needed. Just have faith that all the holds are there. Really fun climb to the top and nice summit pinnacle.
nice peak with ok rock, great views and a grand scree slope to ski.

Last major Oregon volcano
This was my last major Oregon volcano climbed, and a fun one. We roped up for it having never been here before, which probably wasn't necessary, but made it fun.
Second time took my teenage son, his friend, and dad up - definitely roped them up.

By far the best climb yet
Camped at the trail head then started hiking early in the morning. The best part is the last 80 feet! craziest climb iv done yet, but well worth it!

Not so sure what the date was on this one, only that it was in August with my friend Scott. We got to the summit in less than three hours.

This was my last climb of the mountain in 2007, went solo and got to the summit in 2:45, by far my best time. All told, took me a hair over five hours to do the whole thing, car to car.

2nd time
This was my triumphant return to Thielsen, nearly ten years after my 1st climb. Went with Mike, my companion on the first, and his friend Art. What I remember the most is the hundreds of thousands of butterflies swarming the mountain that day.

1st climb ever!
This was my very first climb, full of adventure and craziness! My friend Mike first accidentally let his car roll off the embankment at the Apple Creek Trailhead, but luckily some hunters came by with a winch and pulled us out. I remember being terrified by the climb (ropeless) and the downclimb especially. I was hooked, though, and will always remember this particular climb.
I really liked the little 80 foot climb up the summit block. For a mediocre rock climber this should be cake (both up and down). Fantastic view from the top... I'm pretty sure that I remember actually looking down into Crater Lake. Way cool.

Lovely fall day
After having drooled over thielsen for three years, I finally found the time to hike up there. The hike was no disappointment, and now the mountain is probably one of my favorites. The route is truly fun- lovely scenery, interesting geology, and a lil bit of excitement near the top. The crazy rock formations are probably the best part of the trip, right next to being able to see the water in Crater Lake from the top.
Finally, I've noticed there are a lot of conflicting reports on the difficulty of the summit block. Here's the down and dirty: The last bit of climbing is 80 to 100 feet in length over very good, solid rock. Yes, it is damned near vertical and could be rated a 5.1 climb. Although quite easy with lots of good holds, the summit is quite exposed; if you mess up and fall, you will probably plummet about 2000 feet to your death. No, there are no anchors on top; bring some slings. Rappelling off the top is hella fun. If you don't have a rope, the downclimb should be pretty easy. Summary: Unless you're a little girl, you can do it.
Have fun!
