Tongariro Crossing

I hiked the crossing with my family. I loved being in LOTR terrain. The Emerald lakes were amazing. I highly recommend doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

Nicce side trip  Sucess!

Another nice side trip. Nobody actually out there when I got there. Nice to escape the hordes for a minute with some very nice views. LOTS of stange aphidy beatle like critters at this particular spot. ALL over my clothes, like thousands. Didnt bite though.

Detour on the overly crowded crossing (nice, if nothing else, to get away from the hordes). Cloud down so no views.

Tongariro Alpine Crossing  Sucess!

Started from Whakepapa chateau at 9am, pass by Taranaki Falls along the loop, then Northern Circuit to Mangatepopo shelter, Mt Doom, Tongariro and finished the Crossing at Ketetahi in the dark at about 8pm. Very unique terrain owing to the Emerald Lakes and Blue Lake.

Climbed up from the Ketetahi Hut via North Crater. Was a great day to be out a bit windy but clear. Climed Nguruhoe the previous day, what a beautiful area.

Tongariro Crossing  Sucess!

Stood on the top while doing the Tongariro crossing. Visibility was a bit dodgy. Red crater looked (and smelt) pretty impressive though. Well worth doing, but the crossing can be done in one third the time they say it can.

Route Climbed: Ketetahi Hut - North Crater  Sucess!

Easy walk up to the summit from Ketetahi hut via North Crater on the second day of Tongariro Circuit. Unlimited visibility, amazing views to Ngauruhoe, Ruapehu and even Taranaki.

Rainbow country  Sucess!

Did the traverse twice, once in the deep snow, once in the dry, each a week apart. The most amazing contrast imaginable. The colours of the mineral deposits, the lakes, Lake Taupo in the distance, Ngaurahoe, Ruapehu, just such an overwhelming onslaught of sensory input. Whiteout the first time round meant we skipped the Tongariro summit and kept on going.

As a side trip during the Northern Crossing. White out conditions and very strong winds. Knew I was on top only because there was no more up. Prevented from seeing all those vaunted vistas but at least I had the hill to myself. Excellent day nevertheless.

A straight forward climb from Mangatepopo car park to Tongariro summit, stopping at Soda springs and Red Crater. We arrived at the summit at about 6.30pm and pitched the tent. Woke up for sunrise, took some photos and returned via Emerald Pools.
