Standard Route
Was able to drive my Mazda CX-3 up to La Sal Pass without any problems, as the water crossing was only ~5 inches deep. Weather was nice, with a little snow from a previous storm, and nice views of Moab / Arches / Canyonlands from the summit. Trail was enjoyable, with only one short tricky section of rock-hopping. Definitely see why many would prefer this peak over Peale. Despite being shorter, it seems like a more scenic and enjoyable route, and only took 4 hours going at a leisurely pace.

Spring Peal/Tuk scramble
Starting from about 9800 feet on the road, I scrambled straight up the bare slopes of Mt. Peale. Then traversed across a mix of bare rock and snow to the Razor Fang. Only one or two sections required real class 3 scrambling, and these sections had fairly stable rock. The more difficult sections were easily bypassed by descending a few feet down the slope. Then a steep climb up the snow-covered ridge to Tukuhnikivatz

Mount Tukuhnikivatz
Kessler and I climb Mount Tukuhnikivatz today, starting at 2 PM. Usually you would want to start earlier because of thunderstorms, but there were no clouds in sight, only lots of smoke and haze.
We set off cross country from La Sal Pass, but found the new trail up to the ridge. It was a nice change of pace from the old route. Once reaching the ridge, it was a steep scramble and boulderhop to the summit. Since there was so much smoke and haze in the air, the views weren't as good as they usually are. We could still see the redrock country around Moab as well as the towers in Castle Valley.
We saw a mountain goat on the way down.

From La Sal Pass TH
#1 9-01-18 W/ Lana. Camped near the signed TH at the La Sal Pass. The trail is easy to find - be sure to follow the trail west at the watering trough/semi-completed log structure (@10,500'). The nice trail ends at @ 11,700' and the remaining route is obvious. The final 400' of dinner-plate rock is "interesting." On top of the long summit ridge there are several what I call "kiva wind shelters," natural depressions or holes which offer nice protection from any unfriendly winds. We didn't hurry and our time to the summit was 2+40. We tallied the r/t mileage at 7.05.
I hiked Tukuhnikivatz after easily bagging Haystack the previous day. The new trail (completed in 2015) from La Sal Pass makes this a pretty nice and easy hike. I actually drove to the end of the 4WD road (shown as 4725 on the USGS topo) and hiked from there to the trail, which shaved nearly a mile and 200' elevation gain/loss of the hike. The switchbacks had a quite reasonable grade. The talus was a little loose in places and made for very tedious going. I spent quite a bit of time on the summit, just enjoying the views and the 4G Verizon signal. :) I only saw seven others on the trail, of of whom didn't summit bit instead turned back at the top end of the switchbacks. I was back at my Jeep before noon and headed straight home.

Definitely the better mountain of the two
Only two hours and ten minutes from La Sal pass. The trail was well laid out with switchbacks that take you directly to the ridge. From there I headed off to Mt Peale.

Lots of snow!
4WD thru 8 inches of snow to get to Winter Sports Trailhead. Hiked up road and thru Gold Basin and climbed North Ridge of Tukuhnikivatz. Headed over to Peale and climbed thru The Razor Fang. A rope was nice to have with all the new snow. Skirted the base of Laurel and back down a low angle ridge to join with road. Great day always below 20 degrees. Nice to have axe and crampons.
