Had to climb right over Mt Walter to reach Wheeler Peak. Top 2 peaks in the state in 1 climb!
With Wheeler Peak.
Got it on the way to Wheeler Peak
hung out for a bit to let the bighorns on the saddle to Wheeler meander out of the way.
w/ Wheeler :(
Would have been a shame NOT to tag it, since it's right next to Wheeler. Nothing impressive about the summit, except for the HD view of Wheeler and down into Bull-of-the-Woods. 2nd highest NM peak in the books.
I love this time of year - perfect weather, sunny blue skies, autumn colors! Enjoyed the hot springs at Ojo Caliente, green chili beer and a suite with a kiva fireplace afterward. :-)
Is this really a summit? Probably more like a false peak or sub-peak.
It was a long hard climb that took well... Nevermind.. it was like 10ft off my path to Wheeler. Nevertheless..
A little summit on the ridge to Wheeler.
And it was a good one to take my mind off the fact that Bull-of-the-Woods is unnecessarily circuitous.
Also, as most of my ascent was in the dark, I wish I'd had a reliable, detailed topo map. There were a lot of trail junctions, many of which are not marked. Luckily my intuition prevailed.
Went up Bull of the Woods trail to climb Wheeler Peak and climbed Mount Walter on the way. I descended via Williams Lake. I expected a pleasant late summer hike but encountered full winter conditions on the summit. It snowed 3-4" on the upper ridge with drifts up to my knees in some places. Temps were in the 30's. The wind was blowing 30mph and visibility was less than 100ft. I wasn't fully prepared for that but pressed on wearing only summer hiking boots and lightweight raingear.
Again, another walk up!!!
On the way to Wheeler of course.
Passing through to Wheeler.
we hiked this as part of an ascent of Wheeler. Thanks to Sarah and Ron (who we met on the trail), we all summited Wheeler. Pretty long for a dayhike from the Coyote parking lot. Seeing the bighorn sheep was an added bonus.
On the way to wheeler peak didn't know Walter existed until on top of him. Stopped for awhile to talk to folks there.
Practically ran from Wheeler to Walter to summit before the approaching storm hit. Snapped a couple of pictures, and then it was down the mountain as fast as I could move!
I took the Williams Lake trail but made a short detour to the summit on the way back from Wheeler. Yeah Walter!
A short walk from Wheeler Peak but I actually liked the summit better.
