Second mountain ever  Sucess!

Second climb ever for me. I took along a younger buddy and his girlfriend who initially thought this would be just like a hike in the woods of upper Michigan. Wrong....
Although they were unprepared we still managed to pool our resources together to ensure everyone of us was warm enough. The weather did fight back though. With having little sleep from an overnight drive, 70MPH winds, complete pea soup fog, and the never ending sound of a baby screaming (from another hiker carrying a baby on her back), the Gods of Mt Washington attempted to kill our spirits, from the top of the Tuckerman Ravine to the summit. This long stretch was our Hell.
But, six hours after we started, we reached the summit and ate New England Clam Chowder. Best soup I've ever had.

Ascent via AT 2000 thru-hike  Sucess!

The longest stretch of alpine hiking in the east makes this a great hike. I love the White Mountains and the Presidential Range!!

Auto Road  Sucess!

I feel bad for posting this really - but I have been to the top of Washington via the Auto Road. I was passing through NH on my way from Acadia NP back to home in California. I did use the mountain bike trails at the base while waiting for the road to open though. Wish I had known more about this awesome peak and New Hampshire is a really beautiful state. The bike race to the top sounds killer!

Lion Head Winter Route  Sucess!

Up Tucks to Lion Head Winter route. Wind was 50-60 mph with higer gusts. On our descent the wind picked me up and slammed me to the ground as I was rounding Lions Head. I had to self arrest in order to stop myself. Descended back to Pinkham without any other issues. Later that evening I found out that the higest wind gust for the day was over 100mph. That was most likely the gust that got me.

No Time This Time  Sucess!

We were just passing through the area and had no time for a hike. We drove up Auto Road and spent an hour checking out the views and snapping photos. What a spectacular day. Visibility was 75+ miles in all directions. Of course people were swarming everywhere. Very busy day. I can't wait to hit this summit on foot!

Tuckerman/Lion Head  Sucess!

We climbed up Tuckerman Ravine Trail and descended Lion Head Trail. Visibility was great below about 5500 feet. Socked in good above that. We had a great time and stayed for two nights at Joe Dodge Lodge. Next trip I'm going to do Huntington Ravine!

My, it's cold up there!  Sucess!

Ok. Hands down. Coldest I've ever been. Winds were 70mph. Went up Lions Head Trail. The next winter it took 3 days to summit (going through the Great Gulf). The snow was seriously deep. This was the hardest thing I've ever done to date. It was exhausting. (Like climbing a sand dune in snowshoes!) We climbed it maybe 5-6 times more in the winter and summitted 2-3 times. Went up one year and turned around due to whiteout & whipping winds. Great Great fun!

Tuckerman Ravine Trail  Sucess!

Although the visability was 25' on the Summit it was still a fantastic climb, and a huge adventure. Just what the doctor ordered. Stayed at Hermit Lake 2 nights. Summitted Mt. Monroe via Boott Spur on day 2. Conditions nearly identical. Low visability, wind chill around 15 or so. Sleet, rain and snow.Summer in the Whites.
