Definitely underestimated the Great Gulf Trail. Began around 9am and didn't summit until late afternoon. We hitchhiked down the mountain rather than climbing down in darkness! Weather was great, low 50s.
First but not last time up Washington was most likely the best time Ill have, once reaching the top there were wind gusts close to 100 giving the opportunity to lean back in to the wind and having it hold you up at a 30 degree angle.
the coldest place iv ever been.
Weather: Broken Fog
Temperature: -28°F (-80 WC)
Wind: NW 92mph
Visibility: 1/8 mile

Great hike, very cold and windy. Fist summit!
Really enjoyed the scramble from the top of the scree... a great little climb and from the top... there was a dusting of snow and views as far as the eye could see... what more could I ask for?
Hiked via Huntington Ravine Trail. Man was it foggy!
I've climbed Washington many ways, starting as an 8 year old via the Great Gulf, via the Presidential Traverse, via the Lion's Head Winter Route, via Pinnacle Gully Ice, etc. It's like a home away from home in the Northeast...there's certainly something for everyone.
I'm never going here again.
negative 27 degrees (with windchill), 60mph winds with gusts up to 95mph, low visability (around 15 feet max), snowing... Awesome first winter climbing experiance!
IT was an awesome climb.
Great weather other than the almost perennial clouds covering the summit. There was relatively little traffic on the trail but the cars, roads, and buildings at the summit made it somewhat disappointing. We got a late start so much of the hike down was in the dark. Anyways, I'm looking forward to giving it another go this winter.
Went up the Boott Spur and avoided most of the crowds. Also had a good view of the mountain on the way up. Summit was a zoo.
Ya I drove up in the summer of 2001. Love to make fun of this mountain during climbing presentations out west.
Some friends and I hiked in and made our own camp on the Eastern side of a large stream then connected with the Six Husbands trail up Jefferson then 'reverse-traversed' to Adams and Madison, and back around to Washington. An out-of-the-way approach, but love the 6-husbands trail. Had an epic hike down Washington in the fog. Were walking down the cog-railway tracks which are raised 3-8 feet in most places but were told that the cog wasn't running until we heard the horn but didn't know whether it was coming up or going down and of course we were over a steep drop off 8ft off the ground and couldn't see more than 10ft in the fog. We all ended up jumping off the tracks seconds before the train appeared coming up. Reminded me of 'Stand By Me'! Fun day. Came back years later and skiied Tucks in '02.
Climbed solo to Mount Washington summit under poor, cold, and very windy conditions via the Lion Head winter route. I didn't see anyone on the mountain until I reached the summit. Only three of us were on the summit.
Such a great mountain.
Climbed up the Crawford path in nice overcast weather. At Lake of the Clouds, it started raining, then a little later we were in a cloud. Visibility was sometimes less than 30 feet. It was pretty cool. 6 hr trip.
40 mph winds made the summit rather chilly up top, beautiful day overall with crowded summit and trails up.
1st time up June 5th '06...success... Tux-Boott-Davis-Lawn Cut Off up, Lion down....wx was foggy and surreal. Changed me...made me a hiker :)
2nd time summer 07....Tux up, Lion down.
3rd time, May 08...Ammo up, Jewell down...never saw so much snow!!
4th Aug 08....Ammo up, Jewell down...how different no snow makes.
4(.5) May 30, '09. Lion up....crazy weather....45mph winds (about) rain, sleet, snow....shuttle down. not really a success, we should have turned around earlier.
(saw Nin last year (met him a few yrs before...looking foward to seeing Marty!)
Ascended via Ammonoosuc Ravine-what a great trail! Weather turned bad after stopping at Lake of the Clouds Hut. Slogged to the summit soaked to the bone, decided to play it safe and took the cog back down. HP #3. Loved it!
