Along with Nutting Hill and other subsidiary peaks along the trail. Nice views
I hiked Watatic several times when I used to live in the area. Short hike up with great views due to the mostly treeless rocky summit. The main summit use to be part of a ski area. The shorter east summit is where the best views are. You can see all the way to Boston on a clear day. Other area peaks such as Wachusett Mtn to the south and Monadnock to the north are visible.
Summited twice as part of a 10 mile run up and down the Wapack trail. When I first summited, I was in the clouds. 8 miles later I returned to amazing views.
Up the standard route, down via the old power line trail.
Stayed north on the trail to where it met the ridge north of Nutting Hill. I then went east to the Middlesex County Highpoint, then back to Nutting Hill, then up Watatic Mountain and back down the Wapack Trail. I was able to get up to the ridge in trail runners, but carried my snow shoes. I needed them up top because the snow out to the Middlesex CoHP was soft in spots, and then icy in other steep areas. There were a fair amount of hikers today, many, I assume, fed up with the record snow and wanting to get out for some exercise.
Did the loop via two different trails, picked up 4 geocaches along the way. Done under 2 hours, with the pooch in tow. Cloudy and foggy, I could barely see as far as Route 119. Still it was a fun way to spend a Saturday morning.
The trail was okay, as were the summit views. Compared to some of the other dayhikes in Massachusetts, definitely not one I would do over and over again.
With Blood Hill, Crow Hills & Bald Hill.
Climbed this very early in the AM after a rainy night. Excellent views. It was my first solo hike, but it got crowded quick.
trail went down phone line then
Quick hour climb to good views on the summit. Was surprised at how open it is on top.
