Mount Whitney

Mount Whitney

I went on a hike to Mount Whitney which is the highest summit in the contiguous United States with an elevation of 14,496 feet. We left at around 4:00 AM and returned 13.5 hours later. I was not able to take pictures of Elephant Ear or the Ledges because it was too dark when we ascended that section. We took the mountaineers route up, and the main trail back down. The hike featured class 3 & 4 climbing on the way up which took us about 8 hours. A hail storm came in on our way down the main trail so I could not take pictures for a couple of hours as I was protecting myself and my camera from the 1/4 inch sleet which was followed by rain. I estimate the total distance to be 21-22 miles round trip with an elevation gain of just under 5,900 feet. Amazing Day!!!!! Click here to see pictures

You'll be happy to know the latest survey results show Whitney to be 14,505 ft. making it to be the only peak over 14,500 ft in the continental US.
