It is nice from Consultation Lake on. Great views and your rarely alone.
What an epic mountain in the Eastern Sierra, A must do for all. Take the MR route, worth every bit of extra effort.
Did it in 2 days via the portal. Fun hike, easy.
Started up at night, did a brief cold bivy in my jacket (older and smarter now), then continued up trail to summit. Jet flyover was unnerving.
It was extremely windy morning. Some groups have returned at 10am without reaching the summit. We took a late start which unexpectedly was the right thing to do. Got to the summit by 2pm and return to base camp around 4pm
First 14'er. Big snow year as the switchbacks were still covered in snow on Father's Day. Went up snow chute and it was crystal clear day with almost no wind and no clouds. Had summit by ourselves for about 30 minutes. Couldn't have been better! 14 hours RT.
Been to the top twice. Last time was at the beginning of the JMT.
My 10th summit (?) and first high alpine technical route. FUN!
Crappy snow but clawed and scratched my way up with some friends.
First solo backpack up the Main Trail with 2 nights at Trail Camp.
5 feet of snow on the route and extreme winds made this a character building experience.
This was really fun! Technically easy, just long....and really fun with all the people in great moods!
Climbed Whitney as a day-hike on the Whitney trail. Couldn't ask for better weather, it was clear the entire time and temperatures weren't too cold. Started around 1:30am and returned at 5:30pm if I remember correctly.
A very long day starting at 5:15AM and finishing in complete darkness around 8:00PM. 12 hours round-trip from the parking to the summit and back. Some snow and ice. At least a couple of hours sitting down and waiting for my friends. Exhausting though mostly because of the sheer distance walked (around 32 km).
Long slog up the trail but it was a fun little scramble up Mt. Muir as a detour. Switchbacks were firm but icy in spots with crampons a good idea.
Finally got the chance to do it this year in April on the Mountaineers Route and I was glad to avoid the crowds (and the rockfall in the gully).
We started with showers on the way up to Trail Camp and by the time we got to Consultation Lake there was a few inches of snow that came down. We hunkered down for the night and the next day we summited under clear blue skies and sun. A trip to be remembered!
Took us ten days and 50 miles amazing trip
We took a leisurely pace up the Mountaineers Route, making camp at Upper Boyscout Lake the first day, summiting and returning to camp the second day, and hiking out the third. What a beautiful place! The weather was perfect. HP24
After crossing the Mojave Desert on my bicycle, climbing Mt Whitney was a superb experience. Thanks to SummitPost for the detailed information on the mountaineer's route.
