Used the Cottonwood Lakes and Whitney/Portal loop to acclimatize. An alpine start ensured my success. I would love to revisit the region when I have gained some scrambling skills (and partners with equal ability).
The end of HST (High Sierra Trail); also the easiest day - without the big pack! I don't think I have ever hiked that fast before - literally running... For the first time in my life, I past so many people (most likely day hikers coming straight up from the sea level) along the way...
My second 14er and I did it exactly the way I wanted it to be - via the "backdoor" a.k.a. HST. *^_^* Really good view with dramatic clouds and amazing lighting. ...couldn't have done it without my buddy. A perfect way to end an epic trip. =)
Excellent route. Climbed the Buttress from Iceberg Lake and desended the Mountaineers route. Two rope teams...Matt and Dave, and me and Jason. Fantastic lead Jason, and thanks Matt for navigating the Ebersbacher Ledges in moonlight. Thanks to Gab from Colorado for the Matte on the summit.
Finished our 72 mile thru-hike of the High Sierra Trail, at the top of Mount Whintey. Perfect weather... cold and windy on the summit... and a long line of day hikers on their way up, as we headed back to the portal.
trip report and photos
Great trip in early june, still snow but great weather. Altitude hacked me down at 13k mid-way up the chute.
Climbed as a day hike after 3 consecutive days of biking from Badwater to Whitney Portal. Sweet adventure!
This was the first time I have been on this beautiful mountain or at this altitude. Was not sure how my body was going to react but thankfully someone recommended easy to digest food which did the trick to stay strong.
Got many comments when people saw my pack and how visibly trying the climb was for me.
Can't wait to return and do this again. Worth all the planning ahead and permitting. Amazing trail maintenance and design!
I am in love!
Day hike from Whitney Portal, started on the trail at 3am. Full moon the entire way, hardly had to use headlamps. Beautiful sunrise. Everyone was healthy for the entire hike, wonderful day!
Through the main route.
Early morning ascent from Guitar Lake was enjoyable on the culminating day of our JMT hike from Yosemite.
got up there and down just before the fresh snow started to fly. definitly something i had to do before i left CA.
Early morning summit from Guitar Lake on my final day of the John Muir Trail in 2007.
Awesome day trip from the Portal with John and Steve. Left at 4:15 AM, back by 6 PM...lots of quality time on top. Probably the only time I have been at 14K plus in short sleeves. #19 HP.
Despite severe altitude sickness starting at 13K I knew I might never get another shot, or a more perfect day. No wind, no clouds, just a will to overcome and get up top. Beautiful mountain. The glissade down the snowfield saved a lot of time!
Took off at 3am made the Summit at 8am beautiful summit!
great day, ascent ok, but really struggled on way down
did the mountaineer's route at a leisurely pace, spending two nights at iceberg lake. snow was perfect going up to the notch.
Drove up from San Diego after work and slept in the parking lot. Was on the trail by 6:00 a.m. and back to the car in 12 hours. This was my first mountain and I had no idea how difficult it was. Since that time I have ran 5 marathons and climbed other mountains. Yet, I still consider this the most difficult physical feat I have accomplished. Nothing has ever been harder for me.
Before the hordes, permits, and the N. Fork trail was a blaze. Ahh memories. 2nd time on top first was a day hike in 1987.
