Started at Whitney Portal at 2:40am, reached summit at 9:40am (7hrs). An hour at the summit and descended back to Portal in 5hrs 45min. Drove to Yosemite and did the Half Dome day hike the next day. On the drive back, I could barely bend my legs to get out of the car :)
My very first peak was up the trail to whitney. Nice to go back to do a more interesting route.
What a beautiful mountain! From what I had read I was expecting a lot more trash and people, but it really wasn't bad. We set out from Trail camp under a full moon and watched the sun come up from below Trail Crest and it was one of the most spectacular things I’d ever seen.
Climbed it via the trail from Whitney Portal in 1995 and from the west side during a backpack in 2002. Good for people watching.
Great weather Great climb!
Started at 3:30 am, summited by 8:55 am. Great sunrise. Great hike. Want to try the mountaineers route now. Tried to summit Muir on the way back, but was tired and not comfortable doing the class 3 alone,
Took 3 days, 2 nights and enjoyed it all. Thanks to good fortune with the weather and lots of training hikes, I had no problems.
My first California 14er.
Nice to of said I've done the highest.
My first California 14er--lucked out and got a permit 2 days before. Day-hiked it. Gorgeous day for the summit.
Camped at trail camp with SP members brettwilli, rangermatt, and jonnyboots as part of a two day summit bid. Brettwilli and Jonnyboots both summitted on Day one. While rangermatt and I summitted on day two. Very beautiful scenery and a long grueling climb with a large pack. Could be done in a long day with a day pack much easier than lugging a 30 lb pack up to camp in my opinion. Reached the summit about an hour short of sunrise, but well worth getting up early.
Night at Trail Camp, then up on Whitney at 7am. Had the summit to ourselves! (for a bit)
Beautiful climb. Despite Whitney having the cache of being the tallest, this really is a Sierra classic. Will repeat if neccessary, which it no doubt will be in coming years.
Nice climb. Beautiful weather.
Two day trip with daughter Vanessa on our highpoints quest in 1989. This was the 34th of my 49 state high points, and Vanessa's 33rd.
Enjoyable early morning climb from Guitar Lake in the shade. Beautiful blue skies on top, no clouds or wind. Gary's 2nd summit on Whitney, Gabriela's first. Dan Heuschele also summited with us.
What an awesome mountain! second attempt and had to quit a mile from the summit. I was dragging really bad and plus the weather was going bad. Next year I'll just do the MR. The main trail is not too bad, but I'd rather get to the peak with a little scrambling and climbing involved.
I made it up and down Muir and Whitney in twelve hours. Not a world record, but I was proud of my pace. Great trail even with all of the people. It hailed on me up top, it was a bit scary. August 2004
Did the traditional two day trip with one night at trail camp. Got to the summit at 10:30 next day. Perfect weather. Oldmanmike was with me and did Muir, Keeler, and Day needles along the way. Lots of nice people on this trail with outrageous views.
First time on a fourteener, we felt the altitude a little bit right at the top, but lunch on the summit seemed to fix that. Up and down in 12 1/2 hours (3:00am - 3:30pm) , nice not to be carrying full packs up to camp, people we passed who were, looked hot and miserable. One small snow patch presented no problem. Next time a climbing route!
