3rd State HP  Sucess!

Climbed Whitney as a day-hike on the Whitney trail. Couldn't ask for better weather, it was clear the entire time and temperatures weren't too cold. Started around 1:30am and returned at 5:30pm if I remember correctly.

Mount Whitney 2008  Sucess!

A very long day starting at 5:15AM and finishing in complete darkness around 8:00PM. 12 hours round-trip from the parking to the summit and back. Some snow and ice. At least a couple of hours sitting down and waiting for my friends. Exhausting though mostly because of the sheer distance walked (around 32 km).

Beautiful Area  Sucess!

Long slog up the trail but it was a fun little scramble up Mt. Muir as a detour. Switchbacks were firm but icy in spots with crampons a good idea.

Avoid the crowds  Sucess!

Finally got the chance to do it this year in April on the Mountaineers Route and I was glad to avoid the crowds (and the rockfall in the gully).

Showers , Snow and Sun  Sucess!

We started with showers on the way up to Trail Camp and by the time we got to Consultation Lake there was a few inches of snow that came down. We hunkered down for the night and the next day we summited under clear blue skies and sun. A trip to be remembered!

Awesome weekend  Sucess!

We took a leisurely pace up the Mountaineers Route, making camp at Upper Boyscout Lake the first day, summiting and returning to camp the second day, and hiking out the third. What a beautiful place! The weather was perfect. HP24

Summit & Proposal  Sucess!

It was a fun summit. Not technical...just to do it. Was proposed to on the summit. Glissaded down the snow pack instead of taking the switchbacks. Spent the night in a way too warm Death Valley hotel. The next morning went to THE low point in Death Valley and got buzzed by a fighter jet in the canyon on the way home.

East Buttress (5.7)   Sucess!

From high camp at Iceberg Lake (appropriately named). Rock was very cold the first several pitches, my fingers were numb. Super fun climb nonetheless and gorgeous views. Descent via the Mountaineer's Route.

Up mtnrs route down main trail  Sucess!

Left at 4:45am with Bill, Emily, Robert, Chris returned around 4pm. Group separated mid-way and I ended up summiting and descending w Bill&Emily. Stayed to right of chute before notch to avoid the loose stuff. Last 200-300 ft was fun class 3. Hike down the main trail was nice but uneventful, too many people on the main trail for my taste! Didn't attempt Muir as weather was looking bad (hail+light snow at summit). All in all, great day. Drive home to bay afterwards was pain.

Great day  Sucess!

full moon made the trip up easy with a 3:30am departure... hit the peak 5.5 hours later. Noticed everyone but us using trekking poles and, honestly, unless you already have bad knees, I think they simply were making everyone work harder than was necessary. The trail is too smooth to bother with poles for a dayhike. Also, I appeared the day trekkers were having more fun; the backpackers all had a tired and worn look to them. I know everyone wants to try to aclimate, but we hiked in Death Valley the day before instead, hitting that 282' below sea level point, and had no problem with the altitude. I think the greater issue is the training done in the months leading into the hike. A steady or reserved pace with plenty of food and water breaks should get everyone to the top. Great day... spent an hour on top (bit windy and cold) then four hours down the hill... celebrating with beer and burger at Portal store. One of my 60th year events!!
