Thin Man’s Pleasure   Sucess!

Fantastic route up an iconic peak. This was a fun one to climb and I’m glad I had my partner, Em, along for the experience. Will definitely do again!

Up to Thin Man's but turned around

This was the big climb planned during a four day weekend for the Kercher Classic held by the RockyMountaineers. Started early with a party of six. Saw two bull moose at redrock lake. Saw a young male grizzly on the lower flanks of Wilbur that we had to give a wide berth. Got up to the beginning of Thin Man's Pleasure before it was decided that some in the party were not comfortable with the exposure, and that time was becoming a factor. A dozen big horn sheep were bedded down in the high scree. On the way down, we got to watch the same young griz encounter a much larger sow with two cubs. She flexed her front legs, straightened her back, and gave him a hard stare down. He tucked his tail and jogged back up the mountain! Even though we did not get a successful summit bid, it still turned out to be an amazing day!

Second Time  Sucess!

Another great day on the coolest peak in the park. Caught in thunder, graupel, snow, and rain on the descent but fortunately it was brief. Climbed with Cory, Rob, Astrid. Met a GMS group on their descent.

Favorite Peak despite fall  Sucess!

Group of 4 ahead of us on Thin Man so we were delayed and took some rockfall. Had a late but great summit at 4:20. On the descent got off route for a little while. Then once back on route had one of the rap stations completely fail on a climber. She took a scary fall which could have been hundreds of feet but she ended up falling ~50' and was largely uninjured. Downclimbed in the dark through the night as we were slow. Was a gorgeous night and we had a blast.

Thin Mans  Sucess!

A great Team with Tyler, Kevin, and Ross. All of us were first timers. The day was a bit smokey, but went smoothly.

Climbed again in 2017 on August 20th. the 94th anniversary of its first known ascent by Norman Clyde With Casey and Hannah

Again in 2018 with Cam. The Smoke was so thick you could barley see Iceberg Peak.

Wilbur approach & route  Sucess!

To avoid almost all the timber and tall brush on the lower part of the route walk along the Swiftcurrent Pass Trail about 0.5 miles past Redrock Falls and you'll see the best approach (obvious on Google Earth). There are several great bivy sites on the benches holding snow from 6,300'-6,500' with nearby water. When you reach the scree ledge above the diorite band as described by both Edwards and Brunckhorst the Thin Man's Pleasure route is about 50 meters to the right (north) and the hole you squeeze through is obvious. Another few steps north leads to a 3rd class way to the easy squeeze. Most climbers would rate the route as 4th class; some would like a rope for a short (5m) exposed step when crossing to the top of the chimney route after the squeeze. Currently (8/3/2014) there are two good pitons for rappeling Thin Man's chimney.

Chimney Route

Climbed with Ely Behrhorst & Lia Hardy. We were looking for Thin Man's Pleasure but ended up ascending the Chimney Route instead. Luckily, we realized our error and descended via Thin Man's Pleasure. The Chimney Route is pretty dangerous, but the crux moves are secure and the rock is decent. Being on the summit is a religious experience to anyone who is passionate about climbing in GNP. It was a beautiful day.

The Rocky Mountaineers take on Thin Man's Pleasure  Sucess!

We summited Wilbur during The Rocky Mountaineers 4th annual Glacier Classic (weekend get-away). Seven of us headed up. Six of us reached the summit. We approached Wilbur via Shangri La Lake and Bullhead point. We traversed the entire southeast face on a good goat trail. The weather was great and a good time was had by all. We summited around 3:00 pm and were back at the campground eating burritos by 8:45 pm. Many thanks and kudos to Levi for guiding us up!
