RE: AwesomeThe Froze-to-Death Plateau is one of several approaches to Granite Peak. After climbing the 26 "switchbacks from hell" ascending from Mystic Lake, I left the trail at the huge cairn and began hiking southwest across the FTD Plateau. I established camp adjacent to a nice flowing stream before passing "Froze to the Death Mountain." The FTD Plateau offers absolutely no shelter in case of inclement weather; however, the views are fabulous. Granite Peak was not visible from camp.

Re: Great shot....Thank you. The weather didn't cooperate that morning and we postponed our summit attempt until the next day. Nothing to do all day except photograph goats.

This is great ...Must be some kind of alpine tundra grass
growing at that particular altitude.
Easy to digest for goats. The only goats we
have in Arizona are valley pounders.

Re: This is great ...Actually, these mountain dwellers crave salt from climbers/hikers' urine visiting their alpine home. I was fortunate these goats were accustomed to visitors allowing me to photograph them with a wide angle lens (only lens I packed). Hopefully, everything is alright in the Grand Canyon state.

Re: This is great ...Yeah, finally beginning to "dry out" following five days of rain, reminding me
of times well spent in the Pacific Northwest.

Re: This is great ...Water (or the lack of it) always seems to make the headlines in American Southwest. I recently read that Lake Powell's water level was the lowest since the Glen Canyon Dam was built in 1960. Here in the Midwest, we continuously build higher levees along the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers thus flooding out communities with older lower levees. Building (or establishing camp) in a floodplain is never a good idea.

greatshot! I love the foreboding sky in the back. I met some goats in the Colchuck Lake area years ago. pretty precocious, but I've heard they actually charge people.

Re: greatKnowing the goat might 'charge' me did cross my mind. With only one documented case of a mountain goat killing someone, I inched closer and closer like a cat stalking a mouse, praying I wouldn't become the prey. I envisioned the local newspaper with the headlines, "Man Killed by Mountain Goat."
