I have a small pair. They're pretty rough little things. It didn't occur to me to bring them, though. Regular gaiters will probably work well, too. Anything to stave off the spines, even a portion of them...
I climbed Coyote Peak on 4/15/08 solo from the S drainage in Mendoza canyon. I don't recommend this approach unless you use the old mine road in the N drainage, which is the way I descended. In the south canyon I got cliffed out a few times, ending up in a debris choked gully for an hour. Not fun. Once on ridge system, it was better, but as surgent's desc states, the last 800 feet were very difficult and I've got the cuts all over my arms to prove it. I signed the register, which oddly didn't have an entry since 2005. I left a 9mm bullet in the the register box as well, to go with the plastic gun someone else left. Check it out. I would do it again, but only from the N drainage fr Mendoza canyon which has the old mine road. If it's warm (it got to 93 the day I did it) take 6 liters water. I only took 4 and regretted it. I took 5 hours up and 4 hours down. Probably 2 of that was route finding. I used the $8 swiss army surplus gaiters and they worked fine.

leather gaiters?I've never seen such. I've found that spines that go through my gaiters will also go through my boot. I wonder if these would work...
