Tough trails. Lots of up and down. I tried to do too many peaks on this trip and ran out of energy and had to cut it short before reaching all of the goals I'd set. Didn't help that I got lost for a few minutes in Middle Prong after going for a short walk away from my campsite. The trails are unmarked (wilderness, you know) and there is a maze of game trails and manmade trails all through the woods, which made it all very confusing. Almost made a ten-minute stroll into a night huddled in the forest waiting for light (with nothing but the clothes on my back). Fortunately, after a few minutes of mad panic and running around like an idiot, I calmed down and got my bearings (by using a nearby peak) and was able to scramble through a bramble field back to where my campsite was located. Tore my legs to shreds, but I got back just before dark.
I'm planning this hike shortly, and a friend is thinking of taking a hammock to camp in. Just wondering if he will have enough trees to tie off on. Also, how available is water? It sounds like its fairly easily accessible from your description.
Plenty of water unless you camp out along the gap below Green Knob itself. No water anywhere around there. Pack it in. If you do camp there the nearest water of which I'm aware is back along the MTS Trail.
Again, if you camp in the grassy area you're going to have a hard time finding trees to tie off to for a hammock. But there are tons of forests where you can camp.

Untitled CommentNice job, but you should flush out the route information a little more. What is the shortest route to the summit. How long it the trail? Etc.

I'll plug in route information later. I have to scan my topo map first. Too pooped to do it last night after getting back.

Untitled CommentGood camping site and nice write up in the Shining Rock area. I'll have to check it out sometime. Good spring photos.
