Rattlesnakes were just about eradicated from NH in the 19th century (similar time frame to puma, wolf and caribou). Only one den ( a couple dozen individuals) is currently known in the entire state.
The northern/altitude limit of the range seems to have been somewhere in the Whites (there's also still a population around Lake Champlain, considerably further north but at low altitude, and Wikipedia says they were once found in Ontario). Most "rattlesnake" place names in NH are indeed further south than this.
great pics, we climbed rattlesnake about a week ago. nice easy climb, the loop was the best part. it seems like rattlesnake has about 4-5 summit areas. each one was better than the last. also don't forget to look for the blueberries along the way.

Untitled CommentI thought the northern limit of rattlesnake range was well south of that point. Just wondering.

Untitled CommentNice page about a climbing mountain. Good crisp views from the top. I will have to visit this area and see "son of Kineo"

Untitled CommentGood Page. A suggestion... in the mountain conditions, could you make a link to the Mount Lafayette Page, just to make it easier?
