Overview

Drachenkopf (Dragonhead) is a mountain with two summits connected by a ridge. The more popular and lower Vorderer Drachenkopf (2306m / 7552ft) is often climbed, because it is about a one hour walk/scramble from Coburger hut.
Hinterer Drachenkopf (2410m / 7906ft) is climbed very seldom. I don' t know why, but I think reasons for this matter are the more difficult route to the top and Grünstein (2661m / 8730ft). This mountain is just a few houndret metres from the summit and Hinterer Drachenkopf looks like a ridge to Grünstein.
Both Drachenkopf summits look very unfriendly, because of their rock walls, but the ridge that connects both summits is an easy scramble (UIAA II). The only problem getting on top is, as usual in the Mieming Range, fragile rock. Sometimes rocks of the size of car wheels are loose!

Views from the summit and from the trail to it are sometimes breath taking!
South face of Zugspitze, Ehrwalder Sonnenspitze, Tajaköpfe, Grünstein and Marienbergspitzen are the closest neighbours. Very close to Drachenkopf and Coburger hut is the very splendid Drachensee (Dragon-lake). On the slopes of Ehrwalder Sonnenspitze Seebensee catches your eyes.

Maps and routes overview

Maps:

Routes: From Coburger hut there is only one way leading up Vorderer Drachenkopf (look for the red markings). But there are several ways of getting to this hut.

Via Ehrwalder Alm
Trailhead is the parkinglot of Ehrwalder Almbahn. Trail 31 or 812 to Ehrwalder Alm (signs!). From there follow the forest-road (trail 812) to Seebenalm and up to Seebensee. Trail 23A leads up to Coburger hut.

Via Hoher Gang
Trailhead is the parkinglot of Ehrwalder Almbahn. Trail 37 leads directly up to Seebensee. Some pegs and fixed ropes help you with this steep and narrow path. After you have reached Seebensee, trail 23A leads up to Coburger hut.
Thanks to Vid Pogachnik for information about Hoher Gang. I haven' t done this trail but I' ve found some photos on a german homepage.

Via Biberwierer Scharte
Trailhead is Biberwier. Knappensteig (trail 28) leads up to Biberwierer Scharte (steep!). Follow trail 814 to Coburger hut.

Getting There

Trailhead is Coburger hut. There are several ways of getting there. But first of all you have to go to Ehrwald.
Ehrwald is easily reachable by car via Garmisch Partenkirchen (Germany), Innsbruck (Austria) or Kempten (Germany).
A train connection from Ehrwald to the above called cities exists.
From Garmisch Partenkirchen you reach the airport of Munich quite easy by car or train, but Innsbruck airport is closer to Ehrwald.

Red Tape

There are no permits, fees or seasonal closures.
Parking at Ehrwalder Almbahn is free. Paying a few Euros, this cable car caaries you up to Ehrwalder Alm, which saves you an altitude difference of about 400m / 1312ft.

When To Climb

Drachenkopf is climbed in summer. If there is traffic on the summit ridge, it is fine to have a helmet with you, because of falling rocks.
In winter the summit ridge, which is sometimes quite exposed, is very tricky.
If you try to summit Drachenkopf in winter, be sure to have a rope and your climbind equipment with you!

Camping

I don' t know if camping is allowed on the mountain. But you can stay at Coburger hut.
Ehrwald is a touristic area and has several camp sites and hotels. For more information visit the homepage of Ehrwald.
