Overview

East_Krn

Matajur is part of Julian Prealps in west-south direction to Adriatic see. Mounting was (or still is) a true symbol of Slovenian people, living beyond the present state border. It's a broad, quite powerful mountain, offering a lot to a mountaineering soul: hikes from all sides (also a 1200 m of altitude hike over the rocky and rugged west face), nice ski tours, mountain biking and more...

Getting There

Sunset on Natisone Valley, Matajur and Krn

You can rich this mountain from Soca valley (Slovenian side) or from Italian side (summit is on border of both countries.

When You look for easiest path, You choose Italian side, where is on about 1.300m altitude hut Rif. Pelizzo. When you start in Cividale del Friuli, you choose road Nr. S.S.54 direction San Pietro al Natisone. When you reach Ponte S. Quirino, turn right and follow the signs for Savogna. Drive through Savogna; after a few kilometers turn left towards Montemaggiore and Matajur. The road passes through Masseris.

Cividale_to matajur

Starting point in Slovenia is Kobarid. The best way is from Gorica (south) through Soca valley direction north.
From Kobarid we have two options: over Svino (turn to west - direction border, a few kilometers from Kobarid is then a starting point), or before Kobarid in Idrsko you choose direction Livek. In village Livek we turn right to Avsa (also sign for Matajur).
