Overview

Barrow is a splendid little ridge that rises above the Cumbrian town of Braithwaite. This is a great family climb as there is a clear bridleway that leads directly from the base of the ridge to the summit. Expect to see people on the mountain at all hours of the day due to it's easy accessibility. From the summit one can enjoy fine views of Skiddaw, the Derwentwater and Borrowdale.

Getting There

Braithwaite is located just of the A66, approximately 2 miles west of Keswick. If driving park anywhere you can find a spot in the village and head for the Braithwaite Lodge farm. Then walk up the signed bridleway to the farm and follow the public footpath signs through 2 gates to the obvious foot of the ridge. From here follow the crest of the ridge for approximately 1 mile and 1000 vertical feet to reach the summit. The initial sections are fairly steep and you will encounter a few false summits along the way. The fit walker will gain the summit in 30 minutes.

Red Tape

This hike is on pastureland so keep to the path wherever possible and keep dogs on leads as there will be sheep on the mountain.

Camping

Lanefoot Farm in Thornthwaite offers tent camping. Thornthwaite is located directly off of the A66 about a mile West of Braithwaite. To reach the farm turn left off the A66 at the sign posted Thornthwaite. The farm will be located about 1/2 mile on the left.

There are also a number of self catering cottages available in Braithwaite and Thornthwaite.
