Description

Although Saddleback Mtn. is not a major peak, it is a fun "little" climb and a good place to train. Saddleback Mtn. is very recognizable as the closest mountain to Utah State Univ. campus in Logan, and is the divider between Logan Canyon to the south and Green Canyon to the north. Another identifying feature is the pair of square reflectors on top.

It is easy to underestimate the size of this little mountain. With the trailhead near 5000 ft. and the summit at about 7480, it is nearly a 2500 ft. elevation gain from base to summit, and this is accomplished in only 1.4 miles. As the trail has few meaningful switchbacks, it is extremely steep most of the way. There are also several rock outcroppings to climb over, which makes for a fun change of pace. Near the top the trail disappears, so just make for the highest point, which is just north of the reflectors.

Due to the proximity to town, the steepness, and the terrific views of Cache Valley from the top, Saddleback Mtn. deserves a page on Summitpost.org, as an easily accessible training ground for bigger peaks. Fast climbers need not encumber themselves with a backpack or water, as the climb can be done in around an hour, more or less, and the descent in 45-50 min. (The author's best ascent was under 57 min. and descent in 46 min.) So you can push yourself for speed, after which bigger climbs seem easy.

Getting There

In Logan go east on 1800 N to 1000 E, turn left and then immediately right on 1900 N. Go past the last houses and the road veers left to enter Green Canyon, but instead stay straight on the short stretch of gravel road leading up to an electric power substation, where you can park. Start hiking up the double-track which quickly turns into the trail which is clearly visible going up the mountain.

Red Tape

For hiking, None. This is in the edge of Wasatch-Cache National Forest.

Camping

Many campsites are available along the road up into Green Canyon just to the north of Saddleback Mtn.

Re: Wrong Long

I know it. It did that on its own. I will try again to correct it. Thanks.
