Beware the sand!

When I tried to park (3/30/2018) at the gate located just after milepost 72, my truck got stuck in deep sand and I had to flag down someone with a 4wd F150 to tow me out. Ended up parking on the other side of the highway in a paved pullout (for which I received a notice from the CHP, but thankfully no citation or towing!).

Day Use Area

The directions here state that after descending from the pass in the main Coxcomb wash, "Good camping can be found nearby the entrance of this canyon [that ascends toward the peaks]." However, the entire central part of the range lies within a Day Use Only area meant to protect bighorn sheep habitat. The NPS allows camping only before entering the boulder-choked wash or at the other end of the wash, in "upper basin."

Otherwise, this excellent report straightens out the confusion resulting from inaccuracies on the USGS maps. Thanks for the great beta.

Re: Day Use Area

I appreciate that correction. Was not aware of the day use regulation.
