Mid Velebit from Pag island

Mid Velebit from Pag island

Mid Velebit behind bare Pag island. Between them is Velebit channel which is not visible from this perspective. Sea on the photo is part of Bay of Pag. White cliffs behind are around 250m high. By the left edge of the photo is Matijevic Brijeg (1611m). Just right of it is grassy Satorina (1624m) while around the middle is Budakovo Brdo (1319m). Reason why Pag and other islands below Velebit are bare is Bura wind which blows from it. In winter it often reaches hurricane force (up to 305km/h or 190mph). It lifts up salty spray which can be dense as fog. Those two factors don't allow anything to grow on exposed places and that is 70% of island. Photo: Aleksandar Gospic
