Ellinor with early fall snow.

Just enough snow/ice on trail to keep early crowds down. Nice fall day.

Good views  Sucess!

It was hot (for Washington State) but it was a beautiful hike. Crowded as usual but a fun leg stretcher before Rainier.

A Real Gem  Sucess!

One of my top 5 favorite climbs, has everything for a non-technical route. The goats were impressive to watch as they walked down the steep ravine off the summit, on the west side. Definitely returning with family and friends in the future. Cant wait to glissade down!

Two Summits, One Day!!!  Sucess!

Fellow SPer "Gimpilator" and I summited Mount Ellinor in the morning, taking in the views and seeing at least 15 mountain goats, but then wondered about also summiting neighboring peak Mount Washington via the ridgeline traverse between them. The traverse looked a little too dicey without snowpack covering the entire ridgeline, so we went all the way down to the trailhead and ascended Mount Washington from its south trailhead. 5700' elevation gain in one day was great.

Short But Very Rewarding  Sucess!

Redwic and I made quick work of this one stopping only to gape at a few goats along the way. We had tentative plans to attempt the traverse over to Mount Washington but it appeared to be lacking the necessary snow cover. We returned to the car and then climbed Washington from the standard route. 5700+ feet of total gain. What a day!

Ellinor  Sucess!

Great conditioning climb. Great views. Great goats. Easy enough for beginners (if clear of snow). May want to go up and down a few times to really get a good work out. Trail is nice and steep in parts!

Goats and Dogs  Sucess!

I would have to say this was the first time I can face to face with a mountian goat and he wasnt having it. Thought for sure I was going to get bucked off the mountain. Even funnier was the amount of dogs that make it up there. My count was three on that day. Goats or Dogs it didnt matter if was a great climb/hike up.

Great Sunny Day  Sucess!

The road was clear to the lower trailhead, but a snow bank prevented further driving. It should melt out in a couple weeks. Consistent snow started about a quarter mile below the chute. The chute had slushy snow that had fallen last week. There has been an avalanche all the way down the chute several days ago. The conditions seem to have stabilized. I reached the summit in 2 hrs and the glissade only took 15 minutes. It was a great day.

Olympic Gold  Sucess!

Overcast, cool, with light precip and felt like winter still with the fire road snowed in. Lots of post holing without snowshoes. Stomach deep pristine snow from the base of the avalanche chute and pristine all the way to the summit. Topped out around 4:03 PM and sky cleared enough to see Mt. Washington bathed in partial light, the various cornices, and other peaks, spectacular! Sunrise and sunsets are also amazing. 360 degree color.

First climb in the Olympics  Sucess!

Ascended from the upper TH, 90 minutes to the top. Saw five goats in addition to the scenery. Baker, Glacier, Rainier, Adams and St. Helens were visible in addition to the rest of the beautiful Olympic range. An excellent first climb in the Olympics, with many more to come.

First Mountain  Sucess!

First climbing experience. Snow was pretty hard, ice in some spots, had to really use the ice axe in some areas. The bowl was amazing, saw several goats. Went up the winter route, down the summer. Now I'm hooked!

A fun climb!  Sucess!

We had a wonderful climb on Ellinor. We started at the lower trail head in a fog at 7am. When we reached the bottom of the chute we had climbed above the low clouds and fog and into a nice blue sky day. We put on our crampons and pulled out our axes and made fast progress up the nicely kicked steps. The snow conditions were great. We topped out on the summit around 10am where we were greeted by a little mountain goat. Ate lunch and then started the glissade down. The low clouds had risen quite a bit on the way down and the glissade was really fast (almost too fast for safety). Three people had been injured and rescued the night before so we took our time and were careful on the way down. About 2 hours down and then into hoodsport for a burger and a beer. All in all a great climb!

Schooled on Ellinor

The snow was down to 1800ft on the road (about 2.5 miles from the lower TH). Once we started up the chute the powder got deeper and deeper until it was waist deep (no showshoes!). Fresh, waist deep powder in late April! It was my first experience in powder that deep on a 30-40 degree slope. It was like swimming uphill. We gave up at about 5,100 feet as our progress was being measured in body-lengths per minute and there was no hope of a glissade back down.

My favorite  Sucess!

My husband (then boyfriend) decided to test me on Ellinor. No sweat. I have since taken many people up the mountain, first timers, out of state and out of country visitors. This is my favorite mid-week hike. I don't even know how many times I have climbed it. LOVE IT.

The Long Way  Sucess!

First climb of the new year! We started from the Big Creek Campground and climbed the winter route during the week of sun in mid Jan. The snow was perfect and we didn't need snowshoes but put on crampons at the upper trail head. The glissade was beautiful and the sun was shining. It was fun to have the mountain to ourselves. The approach trail has been completely cleared at this point from the Dec storm however the bridges over Big Creek have been washed out.

Best Glissading!  Sucess!

Late spring climb in tennis shoes. An ice axe would have been a little helpful for my wife and I in parts of the area, but good boots probably would have done just as well. It was definitely one of the best and fastest glissading routes I've ever done. Completely cut out and fast. Very fun with good views.
