May Lake - Mt. Hoffmann, Yosemite: Short and Scenic
May Lake from the Mt. Hoffmann trail Ambret (Summit Post member), Brian (not a member) and I did this short, scenic hike in 2010 as a warm-up for more strenuous hiking down the eastern Sierra Nevada, culminating in Mt. Whitney.
It's a beautiful hike. The trail heads up through pine forests to the May Lake Campground on the southern shore of the lake. The trail to Mt. Hoffmann begins at the western end of the lake. Initially dense, the brush begins to thin as the trail rises above the lake. The trail then goes through tundra until a final, rocky scramble to the summit.
The summit affords wonderful views of Clouds Rest, Half Dome, Cathedral Peak and other areas.
Details
Mt. Hoffmann is 10,850' high. The round trip distance from the trailhead is 5 miles. Total elevation gain is about 2,000'. You reach the trailhead via the May Lake road off of Rt. 120 in Yosemite.
