Smoky times  Sucess!

Used the signed Tukuhnikivatz footpath trail to climb Tuk first, then did the ridge to get to Peale. I think there were a couple class IV moves as I ascended one of the rocky outcrops, once on the ridge it was a quick walk to Peale. Descended the gully and made my way back to the truck. Did not see anyone else on the mountain and the smoke obscured what could have been good views. 8/8 ultra prominent peaks in Utah for me

Mount Peale  Sucess!

It was quite an ordeal to start this climb. We got a late start driving the night before and were planning on using the La Sal Pass Trailhead. I got the vehicle stuck in a snowdrift and we spent a few hours trying to dig it out with our ice axes before setting up the tent on the road and going to bed.

In the morning, I tried to dig out the vehicle again. Kessler and I walked down the road looking for anyone that might have a tow chain. We walked nearly six miles before finding anyone. Thankfully, they helped us out and we were grateful.

We didn't start until 10:00 AM which meant we missed the window of frozen snow and which meant that we would have postholing to do. We postholed up the drainage and made our way to the gully near timberline. Once we were in the part of the chute where the snow was compacted by previous avalanches, things sped up and we climbed to the summit, mostly on snow.

There were two other people on the summit. We took a rest and then headed back down the ridge and traversed over to the head of the snow gully. From there it was a quick glissade (1.5 hours up; 10 minutes down) back down into the trees, where we made our way back to the trailhead.

Spring Peal/Tuk scramble  Sucess!

Starting from about 9800 feet on the road, I scrambled straight up the bare slopes of Mt. Peale. Then traversed across a mix of bare rock and snow to the Razor Fang. Only one or two sections required real class 3 scrambling, and these sections had fairly stable rock. The more difficult sections were easily bypassed by descending a few feet down the slope. Then a steep climb up the snow-covered ridge to Tukuhnikivatz

We camped at Medicine Lake and started the hike from La Sal Pass. There was an easy to follow use trail with cairns all the way to the top.

Nice day on Mt. Peale  Sucess!

Camped at the (new-ish) end of 4WD road 4725 at 38.427967, -109.243643. The higher portion of the road is now blocked by a berm, boulders and a fence rail. Met an inquisitive marmot at the summit. He circled my pack and I and made a raid when my back was turned but I caught him.

Trail hike

Used microspikes in the couloir, was pounded by a thunderstom on descent. Still loved the hike though!

Not as good as Tuk  Sucess!

After hitting Tuk I tried the ridge line but went lower on the south slopes after the going got a little too spicy for me. It wasn't until afterwards that I read the 'Razor Fang' entry and it's aptly named. There were a couple of very jagged gaps on the ridge. The descent off Peale reminded me of coming down Mt Bross in Colorado. Once out of the avalanche chute some routefinding was required to get back to the trailhead.

Mount Peal, from the couloir  Sucess!

I had a fairly easy time going up the snow in the couloir, but at first almost got into trouble trying to bypass the snow on the talus. I'd wanted to cross the ridge over to Tuk as well, but one of my dogs had issues with her paws on the talus so I had to descend the couloir again--what a fun glissade! I wrote up a trip report on my blog here: http://udink.org/2016/07/11/mount-peale/

Plan B Peak  Sucess!

Did the Peale - Tuk traverse today. Went under the fang rather than over. Overcast day kept the temps comfortable. Had gotten rained out of our CO 14ers trip, so backtracked to the La Sals....made for an excellent Plan B mountaineering day. Beautiful aspens on the way up. Forested gem in southern Utah.

Mount Peale  Sucess!

From La Sal Pass. This completed the Utah County Highpoints for me. I needed Mount Waas and Mount Peale going into 8/7/2014 and did Waas on 8/7 and Peale on 8/8. From La Sal Pass I went up the obvious couloir to the ridge and then on to the summit. From Mount Peale I followed the ridge over Mount Laurel to Mount Mellenthin. Returning the same way I got to the three way junction on the ridge for Peale, Mellenthin, and Tukuhnikivatz and then headed over Peale's NW peak and on to Tuk. This was a fantastic two days in the La Sal's where I was able to stand on the top of 10 different 12,000' peak.

Great weather. The glissade down the couloir was the highlight of the hike.
