Rail glissade  Sucess!

Hiked it a bunch of guys and gals. One of the guys, who lived near Asheville, said he knew of a narrow gauge cable railway on one side of the mountain that was used to bring up supplies. At the top was a rusting open hopper car that looked like a giant wheelbarrow. He said he knew how to operate it. "Wanna go for a ride?" he said. It was a long way down and the cable looked rusty but no one was willing to chicken out. We all hopped in, he released the brake and we hurtled down the side of the mountain...and lived.

Overcast and lightening  Sucess!

One hour up with Joy. The weather changed on the way up, clouds came in. We heard thunder so we tagged the platform and got down. Beautiful ridge climb from the parking lot.

First to the top today  Sucess!

Had a great time this morning. First car in the lot. Really foggy at the top despite the otherwise nice weather. Some great views along the way, though.

Mount Pisgah Trail  Sucess!

After a great picnic, a stroll up the Mount Pisgah Trail was just what the doctor ordered. Great views from the summit deck up top, though the temperatures were heating up a bit. Workers were dangling off the summit communications tower. We finished the day by checking in at the historic Grove Park Inn.

I Agree WIth Cortez  Sucess!

It's a steep hike, but you can always have dinner at the Pisgah Inn to reinvigorate yourself.

Mt Pisgah Trail  Sucess!

Great views from here, especially of Balsams. Last bit of the trail will get your heart pumping, especially if you are carrying a 25 lb child on your back.

TV TOWER SUCKS!!  Sucess!

Jennifer & I origionally had planned to hike up to Big Cattaloochee, one of the "Sixers" in Smoky Mountain Park. However, the dirt road along the mountain ridges which led to this remote are a of the Park had been washed away by heavy rains earlier in the week. So instead of turning around & heading all the way back to Knoxville, my wife & I drove th Mt. Pisgah and hiked from Pisgah lodge to the summit. It was a cloudy & at times rainy day but nonetheless it was a good day out.

Trail Route - Class 1  Sucess!

A quick jaunt to the summit. Great views from the top. I was impressed with the number of mountains one can see from here. First climbing trip to the Blue Ridge. Climbed Fryingpan Mountain (to the west) prior to Pisgah. A fun morning.

Shut-In Ridge Trail Run  Sucess!

For those looking for a somewhat unique approach to Mt Pisgah, check out the Shut-In Ridge Trail Race every early November. It starts at the NC Arboretum and goes for 17 miles and 5000 vertical feet along the Shut-In Ridge Trail to the Mt Pisgah parking lot. It's a classic Western NC trail running race. The actual summit of Mt Pisgah can be attained as a short "cool-down" hike.

1.5 miles from Trailhead Parking Lot  Sucess!

Beautiful day for hiking. It was sunny and 65 degrees, however the rocks were wet and very slippery. There were at least 30 others on the mountain but one group was a group of 20 kids so I don't think it is usually this crowded.
