Refreshing in Summer  Sucess!

Great summer hike, very refreshing to be up and out of the heat. Great glissade down the glacier above Emerald Lake, that same day a hiker broke his leg glissading down.

Timpanooke

The Timpanooke trail is super easy...go for a walk, summit, and get back home with a great feeling of satisfaction b/c you spent all day out side but didn't have to work very hard to get great views and a nice summit experience.

Favorite  Sucess!

Probably my favorite peak, I try to climb it at least once a year but I just moved back to Utah so I haven't in a few years. Would love to try an alpine style winter climb someday.

Aspen Grove route  Sucess!

Started hike from Aspen Grove at 3am. Summited by 6am to see the sunrise. The moon was bright so I didn't even use a flashlight past the waterfall. Since I wasn't using a flashlight my eyes adjusted to the dark so well that at one point I noticed the plants around me and the trail in front of me were all of sudden getting lighter. So I stopped and looked up in the dark sky and saw a very bright shooting star travelling towards the earth at a fairly sharp angle. And I could even hear a slight "fffttt" sound. After the meteor burned up I could still see it's trail illuminated by the light of the moon.

Definitely one of the coolest experiences I've had. Also I did the whole hike up and down with a quart of water. I was so dehydrated. I also got off the trail and lost for awhile crossing the boulder field on the north side of Timp.

That day was my birthday and later on I went water-skiing for the first time.

A Must Do...  Sucess!

7/16/06 - Aspen Grove - Timp was one of my goals for 2006 when I first started hiking. Got to do it twice that year.
9/10/06 - Timpooneke - One of Greg's friends wanted to do Timp so we decided to try a different trail.

timpanooke - snow  Sucess!

snow about a mile into the hike, a well-defined boot-pack that had hardened, navigating it made for sore knees. beautiful day. once to the ridge we hit 30mph winds from the west which made things freezing cold up to the summit hut. fun day, good time of year to do it as you beat the crowds. ~4 hours up, ~3 hours down.
no snowshoes/spikes/axe or anything special.

via Aspen Grove  Sucess!

Hiked early in the morning as the sun rose. Waterfalls, wildflowers, and mountain goats all made for a very scenic trip to the summit.

Good Pioneer Day Hike  Sucess!

Hiked up the Aspen Grove trail today. I was on the trail by about 8:30 AM. I took my sweet time and reached the top around noon.

The mountain is very beautiful this time of year - still very green.

There is still some snow in the rock field, but not enough to cause trouble to fools like myself who hike in Vans tennis shoes and shorts.

The mountain goats were out in full force.

Everest Ridge  Sucess!

4/5/08: Went (mostly) up Timp, left from Dry Canyon TR at 330 am and met a bunch of people from the Serac club right after they turned around at the upper traverse just below the summit. The weather was actually pretty nice until a nasty system blew in barraging us with a fierce wind and horizontal snow pellets. I turned around at about 11300 ft in the middle of the 'step' due to deteriorating conditions and not wanting to solo low 5th class mixed terrain...the downclimb sucked and rock was atrocious.

Beautiful route though, very direct and aesthetic.

4/12/08: Success! Quite a bit of snow fell during the week which made for a bit more postholing. Climbed both steps solo, both were snow-covered. Fun scrambling! Gained the summit ridge about an hour past dawn and traversed over to the summit for a glorious view. What an awesome mountain. Left the Dry Canyon TR at 2:45a and summited around 8.

The perfect mountain

10/10 Update. My wife finally went on a hike with me. She and I summited to the usual crowd the first Saturday in October. I resisted the urge to get in a fistfight with those on top.

I love Timp. My goal is a winter ascent, but until then you can find me going up and down the regular trails and even blazing a few of my own. I'll never forget the time I descended down the west face after summiting with some friends - at 16 it lit a fire in me for this mountain.

Timpooneke at Night  Sucess!

We were originally planning on getting there for sunrise, but we left Provo a bit later than we had planned. Getting on the trail at 3:45 in the morning, we summited about 3.5 hours later. The trail is quite scenic, though we didn't get to see much of it while it was still dark. It's nice to see wildflowers once in a while.

I wish I would have known more about the geography of the area when I did this hike. It would have been nice to know what I was looking at. Oh well, maybe I'll have to use that as an excuse to do it again!

Aspen Grove trail  Sucess!

A friend said he was going to sun-rise hike Timp. with a group and invited me to join them. I arrived at the parking lot a little late. So just hiked a little faster then normal to catch them. After passing hundreds of hikers and about 3 hours later I was on the summit. I found out later that not one person in that group even drove to Timp. parking.
