First 14'er

Hey guys and gals,

First post here. Just thought I would let you all know about my first real mountain trip up Mt Whitney. I am real new to this and am trying to get into mountaineering big time. In August I decided it is time to get m feet wet and start climbing some real mountains. I live over here in the hills of Virginia basically and am tired of getting to the top of a mountain with no real view. I like hiking the AT and all but I am all about going "high" I guess. Anyway..... I decided to try and bag Mt. Whitney for my first 14'er. I read a bit about it and seeing that it was the highest peak in the lower 48 I thought that would be pretty sweet. So I did about a weeks worth or research and after figuring out all my logistics I booked my travel plans. I have a friend that lives and San Diego and he also is looking to get into mountaineering. We decided that we would attempt this one together. Not really knowing what we were getting into we opted to try Whitney as a 1 day hike. So I took a gamble and flew out to San Diego, spent the night there, drove to Lone Pine and got our permits. Im sure you all know about the permit situation for Mt Whitney. There were only 12 left when we got ours. So we were in Lone Pine the day/night before. we stayed at the new Whitney Hostel which was amazing by the way. Im going ot try and post all my pics when Im done. So we checked out the trailhead the day before becuase we knew the next time we would be back it wasnt going to be as bright. So we had a pretty early dinner and hit the hay around 7pm. The hostel had some great curtains and allowed us to get to sleep pretty quick. The next morning we wonke up at 2:30am, quickly got our gear together and headed to the trail head. We started our ascent by headlamp around 3:15am. I couldnt really tell how far we had gone but we planned a quick stop every hour on the dot to rehydrate and get a quick bite to eat.(GREAT DECISION) On our way up we were passed by a number of people who were hiking much faster than we were. We kept our pace and reached the high altitude lakes probobly around 8am or so. I forget the time. i was trying to keep track of our pace by watching my altimiter watch. By the time we had refilled our bottles at the lake and started back up the mountain towards trail crest we noticed that we were actually ahead of the pack. We saw a number of the people that had passed us much earlier about 500-700 feet below us when we reached trail crest. By that time I dont knwo if it was me being tired or the altitude that was making me so dizzy. Not enought o stop me but we had to take our breaks about every half an hour or every 45 minutes. Going around the back side of the mountain was probobly the hardest part of the hike. Again maybe because I was so dizzy and it becomes very rocky for a bit back there. Anywho... we made it to the summit around 11:30am. I didnt think that was too bad. The peanut butter and jellys we had packed really hit the spot. We stayed on the summit till around 12:00 or 12:15 I guess before heading back down. The hiek down was absolutley horrible. I was just ready to get off the rock. We were both so tired and we hadnt realized how far we had hiked through the night. It was really hard to judge how much further we had to go to reach the trailhead. It took us about 5 hours to get down or maybe 4.5 hours. We reached the trail head right at 5pm but we stopped at the lake to refill the waterbottles on the way down again. So once we were done we decided we had enough energy to drive back to San Diego that night. After the hiek we thought it probobly would have been better to hike Whitney as a 2 day hike. Im not sure. We didnt run inot many people hiking it as a 1 day. A few people called us crazy. Well I guess thats my story. If you have any questions please ask. Im not sure what exactly to put in my trip reports. I plan on attempting Shasta in May and Rainier in September. Ill keep you guys posted.
