This was the only other "person" I saw or heard all morning until I was nearly back to Ash Creek Spring. He wasn't too pleased to find himself only about 10 yards from me and ever after that kept at least this far away. Red Rock Canyon NCA, Nevada-- February 2014

That's a good question. I suppose after eons of evolution, they don't hinder them at all, but I have to wonder how much better they'd be without them.

One thing that seems likely, though, is that they affect balance during a fall. I saw a poor ram tumble over 50' once down into a wash in Death Valley a couple years ago. Fortunately, it got up unscathed.
