Nest of Skylark with eggs

The Skylark (Alauda arvensis; Polish-Skowronek) is one of the first migratory birds to arrive in Poland after winter. It nests on the ground and its nests are hidden among tall grass and are very difficult to find. The female lays from 3 to 5 eggs and sits on them for 12-14 days. Young leave nest just 9 days after hatching. Alauda arvensis is a small bird of open pastures and meadows. Photo taken by my cousin Ewa in the Low Beskid on August 22, 2008.

Do you also celebrate Skylarks Day

on Spring Equinox in Poland? It is a very touching way to celebrate coming of Spring, but I am not sure if it is a purely Eastern Orthodox kind of a folk tradition...

We don't celebrate Skylark's Day in Poland but this bird is considered to be the herald of Spring. Greetings, Henryk.

Yes, Russian villagers say that larks blaze the sky trail for all the other migratory birds. Another of the many traditional couplets goes,

Larks, dear larks! Fly to us!
On your little wings, bring to us
Sunny Spring and warm Summer
And take away chilly Winter!
