Nevada Coyote

Nevada Coyote

Coyote (Canis latrans) spotted before noon near Las Vegas Bay. Lake Mead Area, Nevada. February 2008. His mate was nearby, resting in the bushes. The coyotes are members of the Dog family. They have adapted to various conditions throughout North America and can be found from the low deserts to higher mountains. Interesting facts: *The coyote's tail is used in threat displays (it is held horizontally when the Coyote displays aggression). *The coyote can run at almost 40 mph and can jump over a 8' fence. *They mate between January and March *Their lifespan is about 15 years in the wild

Re: Nice photo.

Wow, I didn't expect this photo will be so well welcomed. Coyotes are very common in the US and most people don't get excited about seeing them. I always find it interesting how they still manage to stay so wild and different from domestic dogs.

Thank you for the comment and vote. He was afraid of me and I eventually stopped following him so he can go back to his companion. Greetings, AJ.

I've always wondered

if a coyote could take down a Bighorn sheep.
While I was hiking in Utah several years ago,
I saw one chasing a deer. They both disappeared over a ridge. Nice photo, Anya!

Re: I've always wondered

It's likely that a coyote could take down a baby bighorn, but it probably happens seldom. Moms are very protective and extremely watchful. They all can quickly escape up the cliffs where no coyote can get.
Thanks for the comment Larry.

Re: Very informative

Thanks CP. I didn't realize they can run so fast until I took this picture and then went home to read about them.
