Night on Vaganski Vrh

Night on Vaganski Vrh

~ Velebit / South Velebit / Vaganski Vrh ~ Night view towards the E from Vaganski Vrh (1757m), highest peak of Velebit. Right is Golic (1723m). Behind is sea of fog in Lika region. Orange area left of Golic is fog lit from below by strong lights on the Sveti Rok highway exit. Orange area of the left is lit by Gornja Ploca highway exit. By it is summit of Zir, an island peak in Lika, which is barely peering above the thick sea of fog. Further behind is dark massif of Licka Pljesivica. Below it, on the left, are lights of Udbina town. Two distant mountains on the right are Osjecenica (1795m) and Klekovaca (1961m, 90km away) in Bosnia & Herzegovina. Photo: Aleksandar Gospic

Re: Great night shot!

Thanks Vid! It was exceptional day and such was the night, so clear. Being there then was fantastic, a real reward for craziness :-)

Re: Great night shot!

Only yesterday I saw also other photos from that night. Thanks for sending them, they're really great. It would be interesting to compose a panorama of them.

Re: Great night shot!

You welcome Vid! I didn't have a tripod with me so it was not possible to make a good panorama because exposure is too long and from the improvised stands I couldn't rotate properly. And also Goga went crazy; she froze while waiting till I fulfill my hunger for photos :-)

Was it...

a hard job to add the stars in the sky by hand? ;-))

Great photo! Since the images of the stars aren't single spots, can you remember how long was the exposure time?

Re: Was it...

hahaha, yes, could have added a bit more! :-) Thanks Livio! Exposure time was 36.7secs. Damn, the Earth is spinning too fast! :-)

A wow-photo!

No words!

The bright spots in the fog must be street light from settlements underneath? Am I right? If yes, it must have been amazing experience that night!

Re: A wow-photo!

Thanks Gordan! Read the caption :-) Orange spots are brightly lit exits on the highway. Judging from the barely visible summit of Zir fog is some 250m thick (Zir is bit higher than that above the Lika floor). I couldn't believe when I saw those spots, crazy. And you can follow them lined up along the Lika. Villages are to small with too little lights to be visible. But spot were Gospic town is was visible!

Re: A wow-photo!

I admitt that I havent read a caption!!! I just stared at photo and had to write a word and attach four more stars to this photo.

Reminds me of "Close encounters" (Bliski susreti trece vrste), by Spielberg. :-) Have you seen any alien that night ? (bears, maybee) :-)

Re: A wow-photo!

hahaha, no close encounters that night but something extra terrestrial did happen!!!! This is not a lie; when we were climbing Vaganski Vrh suddenly with my left eye I noticed something bright, I turned and it was meteor burning in the atmosphere, flying quite low above Vaganski Vrh line, from that angle of course! OK, this is not something unusual but what was unusual is that it lasted for almost 5seconds which is very long. I had time to shout to a friend to turn few times and it was still there. Maybe aliens tried to pick us up but they crashed and burned!! :-) Well, it was extraordinary night in every sense!
