Dayhike
Dayhiked from Bear Gulch. Happy to find the cave open today after rain had it closed all week. The hike was straightforward and surprisingly easy to North Chalone. After leaving my buddy and bagging Middle and South Peaks, it became a more tiring effort. Was surprisingly sore after this trip.

Well marked trail from the reservoir. Nice views, much less crowded than the high peaks area of the park.

With South Chalone & High Peaks Trail
Started near Bench Trail-Bear Gulch Trail junction about a mile east of the Bear Gulch Nature Center. Hiked the Bear Gulch Cave with my wife and 3 young ones, then raced up to North Chalone and South Chalone before returning to the Reservoir and completing a Rim Trail-High Peaks Trail-Condor Gulch Loop.

Not Many People
I've been up there two times now and I only passed about a half dozen people each time. Perhaps most people don't care for a long, warm (hot?) hike up a nondescript trail/road through the chaparral. It's more for us dedicated peak-baggers than your average tourist I guess. But nice views of the surrounding countryside and really gives you a birds-eye view of Pinnacles National Park.

From Bear Gulch via Chalone Peak Trail
On the way to Oregon, stopped by Pinnacles to officially mark it as a new park. Took a few hours to do the trail to the park highpoint. Easy trail for fit hikers, fantastic views from summit at only 3300'! Would not do this in the middle of summer though.
First time was in high school (1973). In 1980 via a traverse of Mt. Defiance. I even got my then non-hiker future wife to the top in the early 90's. The real challenge will be to get my video-gamer son (11) to the top this spring.

This hike and the park in general offered some interestering terrain features with reservoir and some of the other areas in the park.

Nice hike
Nice hike from Bear Gulch on a sunny spring day. Did the High Peaks route on return to check out the 'pinnacles' and to make it a complete day of hiking. The outhouse on the summit is pretty beaten up and in need of repair. Suggest anyone doing this is spring avoid the weekends when crowds overrun the Bear Gulch area (99% only go up to the reservoir through the cave).

Bear Gulch Trail
We were supposed to climb Junipero Serra but the Military had closed the only access road. After hours of driving around trying to find the non-existent alternative to the peak we settle on Pinnacles. What a great alternative to have. I was amazed by the park. The Bear Gulch Caves were incredible. The view from the peak was great and the trail was in great shape. Not too many people and the weather was fantastic. I can't wait to head back.
