Excellent Shot

Thanks very much for sharing. I'm assuming that this was taken during the first winter ascent of that route?

Re: Excellent Shot

Yes, and that was the only photo we took on that very cold day on Jan 8. Frank shot the photo with one hand while tied off to an ice screw and the camera was tilted a bit making the photo look steeper than it actually was. However, in 1976 the face and gully held a lot more ice than it does now and the angle has decreased as a result. By 1990 half of the ice cover on the North Face was gone.

steep

I remembered it as steep but that is really steep. Was this taken by Frank?

Re: steep

Frank was on his front points and tilted the camera so it appears to be steeper than it really is.

2010

Thought I my partner and I were gonna tag it but he chickened out at the crux move. Was so disappointed that I was so close without a summit.

Good on'ya! Thanks for posting.
