North Nuamkuan Glacier

with the "unknown" NE face of the mighty Shkhara dominating the skyline. View from Dykhsu Glacier (a.k.a. Dykh-Kotyu-Bugay).The twin cascades of icefalls of lower North Nuamkuan are clearly in sight, as is a prominent snow coloir to the right. However, it is not the Icefall Bypass coloir to the best of my memory. The correct gully is hidden in the fold of rock mid-way between the impostor gully and the glacier. August 1987. Picture taken on our two-men volunteer run to pick up a food cache from Cherek-Balkarsky ... a valley hike supposedly, but, as it turned out, a very long day of avy-downed forest and iffy trails.
