Drove in from Mote Exit off I-80

Nice day for a hike. We got off on the Mote exit (#222) just a few miles west of Battle Mountain. We drove a main two-track towards North Peak and then took a few others until we found our way up a little canyon and spotted a good place to park. It was very easy to drive our way up. High clearance & 4-wheel drive but we didn't run into any really bad spots, just a few ruts. We started out hiking at a lower elevation and the first bit was steep but the footing was great. We could see the road that Dennis drove once we got up high enough and there was still snow on it. I bet it will be gone soon though. There are many places a person could park and take off on this side of the mountain. The route to the top is very easy to follow. Spectacular views!

North Peak  Sucess!

There was a fair amount of new snow on the road heading up Little Cottonwood Canyon, so I pulled off the side of the road before it started climbing and jumped in Greg and Kadee's 4Runner. Greg slowly, carefully worked his way up the switchbacks to the pass at 7440'. Where the road drops down into the basin below it was pretty heavily snow drifted in spots so we made the pass our starting point. From the pass we hiked up the ridge line to Long Peak and continued on the ridges for a little while before the strong cold winds persuaded us to drop down off of them. Once to the summit we didn't stay long as the bitter cold winds were whipping. We wanted to try and dig out the register and benchmark but decided to quickly head down. On the hike back we stuck to the route where one would drive and hike under dryer conditions. A lot of up and down on this one.

Interesting drive in  Sucess!

Ken Jones and I both drove our vehicles in following the directions provided by Dennis Poulin. We finally stopped on a saddle and hiked from there. Five miles round trip and close to 1500' of elevation gain overall. It was our third summit of the day considering that we did Mary Mountain's north and south summits earlier in the day.
