Northern Saw Whet Owl

Northern Saw Whet Owl

For the album 'Birds in the Mountains'. The Northern Saw-whet is a very small, short-bodied, Owl. The overly large head has no ear tufts. While these owls look small when perched in flight they appear larger because of their broad wings. Northern Saw-whet Owls are primarily nocturnal. The Saw-whet Owl's name comes from the "skiew" call that is made when alarmed. This sound has a resemblance to the whetting of a saw.

Remember hearing one..

..while hiking on the PCT in western WA.

I believe their call is more higher-pitched
than the Spotted or Great Horned.

Really good photo.

That guy's eyes are fantastic. I love seeing owls. Almost never see 'em around here during the day, though.

Re: Really good photo.

My occupation as a wildland firefighter has allowed me to see a number of owls in the daylight, admittedly not their favorite time of day.

Re: Really good photo.

Back when I fought fires, I wasn't really
paying attention to the sights and sounds around me.

Besides, all the protective gear I was wearing was preventing me from doing (or seeing) anything but my immediate job's surroundings - (that was) to
hopefully quell the fire.

But, on my days off, it was a different story.. THANKS for the link!

Re: Really good photo.

My 'fire district' spans the mountainous Okanogan Highlands south of the Canadian Border. Over one million acres, sparsely populated. As a commanding officer I travel the district extensively, often encountering wildlife. Its one of the benefits of the job.

Re: Really good photo.

I can completely understand..

It's an added bonus to have an "office"
that spans over one million acres.

Happy Holidays to you..

Please click for the call of this owl.
