One day permit  Sucess!

Definitely sore after, but hands down fantastic climb, especially while there is still snow in the chute

MT. WHITNEY  Sucess!

I did it!!! Climbed Mt. Whitney in one day! My first 14er!! You must train physically in high elevation mountains to acclimate to successfully summit her! It was tough, but doable. I will never forget this day!!

Trailblazin'

Trailblazing up the Mountaineers Route for a winter attempt. Shot down by the first major snow storm of the year.

Idiot in a storm  Sucess!

Standard Whitney Trail with a one-day permit. Got a late start and the lightning started right after I reached the stone hut. As the air crackled around my head and my hair stood straight up, I thought I was going to die. I was dumb; I should have turned around when it started to look bad. Don't be like me.

This was my 8th Whitney hike, and I guess I just had too much wanna-get-it-done-itis.

HP #12!  Sucess!

Did this in a single day... very difficult for a single day hike. Especially for me cause this was my very first time at such high altitudes. Diamox helped to prevent altitude sickness.

Spotted a bear at trailhead too which was a bit scary!

Picture Perfect  Sucess!

Standard route from Whitney Portal via Trail Camp. Made it a 2-day trip staying the night at Trail Camp before summit day.

Pretty straightforward. In ideal conditions this is not a difficult summit at all if you are well-trained.

No water available above Trail Camp, especially this time of year.

From Trail Camp it was just under 2 hours for us to reach the JMT. From there, another 90 minutes to the summit; quite leisurely, as this is by far the highest my wife has ever been so we took frequent breaks about 13,600' for her to catch her breath. We started at 4:30 a.m.; spent 45 minutes at the summit; another 60 minutes breaking camp and filtering water; and reached Whitney Portal by 4:30 p.m. This was a relaxed pace but important to me my wife got to go with me.

Those we met who were attempting a single-day summit seemed to overestimate their fitness level -- even with loaded packs we were moving faster than most we encountered on both the ascent and descent.

It was an overwhelmingly beautiful day and the views were just incredible.

End of JMT  Sucess!

Worth hiking the 220-something miles along the John Muir Trail to the summit. Got an alpine start, watched the sunrise and bolted down to the Portal for burgers, fries, and beer.

Memorial hike for my father  Sucess!

My brother John, his son and I backpacked in to Outpost Camp and summited Whitney via the Whitney Trail + JMT in remembrance of our father, who introduced us to the high Sierra. My father and I did multiple trans-Sierra backpacks to the summit of Whitney and did the Mountaineer's Route independently. We love you Dad!

Our objective was Mount Muir but I had fun "summitting" Whitney twice in one day! We had fun climbing the ledges in the center of the gully that leads to the crapper on the summit plateau. Sunrise on the east face of Whitney at Iceberg Lake was spectacular.

A repeat trip, this time with Maria. I believe our reason for doing this was that we couldn't get a permit for the trail, but it turned out to be nice because we didn't see a soul until Crabtree meadow... not even an animal. Not a busy weekend I guess.

Route Climbed: Backpack from King's Canyon Date Climbed: July, 1984
Another backpacking trip with my dad and brother Alan. This time we started in King's canyon, followed Bubbs creek, crossed over Forester Pass, and followed the JMT out to the Portal. Bagged Whitney on the way out.

Route Climbed: Backpack from Mineral King Date Climbed: July, 1982
Another great backpacking trip with my dad, this time a trans-sierra trek, ending at Whitney Portal. Bagged Whitney along the way on a empty stomach because bears took half our food in Kern Canyon :(

Route Climbed: Backpack from Horseshoe Meadow Date Climbed: July, 1981
Possibly my first Sierra summit. Aside from nearly be struck by lightning on the second day, the trip was fairly tame, just a fun trip with my dad that got me into the mountains.

Whitney dayhike summit - first time!  Sucess!

Summited Whitney via the Whitney Trail with two friends in a 15-hour push. Left Whitney Portal at 3am, summited by noon, back down by 6pm.

Do not let people fool you, the trail after Trail Crest is still a long, dispiriting slog to the summit

Cruised up the trail and then took a snowy shortcut up the chute towards the top. That last half mile of the trail goes on forever! Great success!!

6-4-2018 Conditions  Sucess!

Trails were mostly clear of snow until Consultation Lake. We (and most groups) used crampons from High Camp to Trail Crest, taking them off at high camp for a bit before putting them back on once more for a few snowy stretches on the back side. A few people used microspikes but were slipping and not having a great time. There is one well-worn glissade path and people were starting from the very top of Trail Crest when the snow had softened enough.
