My 19th County High Point  Sucess!

Working on reaching the highest point in all 29 of Utah's counties. Did this one Sept 5, 2021 from Spirit Lake as 19 of 29 counties. I estimated the one-way distance at between 4.5 and 5.5 miles.

Brisk  Sucess!

We left Roosevelt at 0730 and headed east, then north along the Whiterocks Highway. We found the dirt road to be in good condition; didn't need the 4Runner. An ordinary highway vehicle would have no trouble on this road - at least in good weather.

Parked at the Chepeta Dam at 0900 and headed north on the two-track to Moccasin Dam, then along the top of the dam to the trail past Papoose Lake. We rounded the north end of the lake, seeking an opening in the steep talus slope that bounds the east side of the lakes. (I wouldn't like to ascend or descend those slopes when wet.)

The USGS topo displays a stream feeding Papoose Lake from the east side, which marks a gully in a spruce forest. We headed east into the gully and discovered a well-trodden game trail that soon turned southeast and climbed the gradual slope. Didn't investigate to see if a route along the stream would have been as easily navigable. The game trail ended at about 10,960 feet (N40 48', W110 00.3'). At this point, we turned NE and headed towards a low point on the ridge (N40 48.607' W109 59.339').

At about 11,600', we turned approximately ENE and picked our way up the talus slope. The wind shelter at the summit did not become visible on the horizon until we reached about 12,000 feet.

Returned the same route. Wind about 25 kts, temps in upper 30s.

Eccentric Benchmark via Spirit Lake  Sucess!

My 9th Utah county high point. I decided to take the Spirit Lake route as the drive is an hour less from my house than the Chepeta Lake route. I love doing the no-trail, get-out-your-map-and-compass kind of hikes, but this has been my least favorite of the county high points so far. It was a real trudge up the talus. It was also an unusually cold, cloudy, windy day for late August, which made the going even slower. I'd like to give this one another go to see if I feel differently.

Used both trailheads but not intentionally  Sucess!

Hiked from Spirit Lake, used part of the Daggett Lake trail and would recommend that instead of bushwhacking from the bottom (adding a route to the page with more details). Had to exit the summit quickly due to storms and ended up at the Chepeta trailhead. After the storms passed I hiked back over the ridge to Daggett Peak and down to Spirit Lake barely before nightfall.

Part of a backpacking trip  Sucess!

I hiked Eccentric Peak as part of a backpacking trip (my first ever) along the Uinta Highline Trail. Started well east of Leidy Peak and spent the night just below the peak. The next day we pushed on all the way to Chepeta Lake and spent the night there, then summited Eccentric the following morning. Three days, two nights, and 26 miles in all. http://udink.org/2011/08/12/uinta-highline-trail/

Chased by lightning  Sucess!

From Spirit Lake over Daggett Peak to Eccentric and back over Daggett Peak with RB. After the 2nd crossing over Daggett Peak, dark clouds and lightning scared us enough to run down to treeline. Rounded, broad summits that are not as dramatic as the High Uintas Wilderness peaks, but fun and secluded. We didn't see anyone else on the peaks in the middle of summer!

From Chepeta Lake  Sucess!

Day started out gorgeous but the clouds moved in quickly from the north. Walked down in the rain, wind, and little bit of hail. This was my 27th county high point with two more to go.

from Chepeta Lake  Sucess!

Hiked this on with my daughter Tori on a breezy, partly cloudy, cool July day. This was another "twofer" (Uintah cohp and Daggett cohp) in my pursuit of the highest point of Utah's 29 counties. 27 counties down...2 to go.

Spirit/Dagget Loop  Sucess!

Took the Spirit Lake to Dagget peak to Eccentric Peak and down the north face to Dagget Lake and then back on the well maintained trail (once a bit away from Dagget Lake). This made for a very entertaining trip and is suggested to a there and back and only slightly longer from this side. The south side looks relatively boring comparatively. If I were to do it again I would do my loop in reverse. Going down the face of Eccentric was steep and loose and would be more enjoyable to ascend and then descend the more gently Dagget peak. The summit itself is among the broadest I have stood upon. The views to the east are charming and show the gently character of the high Bollies as relative the more profiled western Uintah. We saw many mushrooms en route especially around the picturesque Dagget Lake. The area above the lake was also very pretty. This peak surprised me and was more enjoyable than I foresaw. Only 2 more to finish the highpoints!

Nice  Sucess!

Climbed from Chepeta Lake. Beautiful afternoon above treeline and about a million stars seen from campsite near the lake that night.

Spirit Lake to Daggett Lake vatiation Loop  Sucess!

Hiked from Spirit Lake to Daggett Lake then straight up the North side. From Eccentric peak over to Daggett peak and then back down to Spirit lake. It was about 9 miles total. I think this loop made for a little bit more exciting outing than just and up and back type of deal. No back-tracking at all.

:)  Sucess!

Came up with Kirt and the boys for a 4 day backpacking trip that didn’t quite work out like we planed. We camped next to the lake and headed out the next morning. We made it over half way up and Kirt was out for the count and went back to camp and my son and I went up to the peak. Came back to camp and packed out.

From Spirit Lake  Sucess!

Nice hike on a nice fall day with Moogie737 and Brent. It took 2 tries to get to the trailhead. We made it almost as far as Park City only to be towed back to Salt Lake at which point we tried again in a different car.

Not this time

I don't recommend puking your way up as a means of transportation. Must have been the Arby's from the day before...
Ended up going home early, putting a damper on what was supposed to be a 4 day backpack trip with the kids.
