If you look at a zoomed in view of Google Maps or the map on this page it appears as though the Observation Tower on Clingmans Dome is actually in N. Carolina, but in approaching the tower the paved trail enters TN. Also the AT, 80 meters to the north, is definitely in TN. Can anyone shed some light on this, as to whether or not concrete tower is in NC or TN. Please and thank you. This begs the question as to where is the actual highpoint of Clingmans Dome if it isn't the location of the tower.
I've looked at a bunch of maps (both paper and on-line) and I can now say with confidence that the tower is not in TN.
It's interesting to know the Tower is in NC not TN. Zoom in on a map and you will see the tower is clearly in NC. Bit of a shocker as we all are lead to believe the tower is at the highest point in TN. The topo does show that part of the peak is in TN and the paved trail to the peak crosses into TN, as does the AT. Photos on the tower are not the highpoint of TN but rather the third highest point in NC.
