Snow covered the trail  Sucess!

Almost 2 miles of the trail was still completely snowed in and was hard to follow any tracks of other hikers. We were lucky enough to find our way and make it to the summit!

Trapper Creek Trail  Sucess!

I liked the forest and waterfalls along Trapper Creek, but both times I've been here ended up with a cloudy summit. I guess a third visit is in order. Worth the effort and free from crowds.

Route Climbed: Observation Peak Trail up, Trapper Creek down Date Climbed: April 24, 2005  Sucess!

3/27/05-Attempted to do Big Hollow Trail but the creek was too high to cross anywhere I could get to. Ended up heading back to Portland and did Larch Mountain.

3/30/05-Ran into some animal at 2500 feet in a half-excavated burrow. He stuck his head in to hide while the rest of him stuck out the hole. Couldn't tell what it was, see the submitted pic. Hit snow shortly after and it just got deeper and deeper. Was thigh to hip deep at 3600 feet with no snowshoes so I bailed.

4/24/05-Climbed with Don and Ardith (see Don's log below). The hike started off well as we came across a group of about 5 elk on the trail. Then it was on and up through the huge old-growth giants and waterfalls. Hit snow about 3600 feet this time but nothing we could not get past. After summitting, we tried to do the loop back to the Sunshine Trail but lost the trail in snow somewhere. Don't let Don fool you, I cut off half the map when I copied it so we never really had a chance to know where we were. Ended up doing the longest route (Don said something like almost 17 miles and 4400 feet of gain on a 4200 foot mountain according to his GPS!) but that was good as we got to see more waterfalls and some of the biggest fir trees I've ever seen. Saw no one else on the trail on any of these hikes. Was a great day and enjoyed Don and Ardith's company.

Route Climbed: Observation Peak trail Date Climbed: April 24, 2005  Sucess!

Had a great day in an amazing forest with Brian and Ardith. We took our time, took lots of pictures, admired some of the largest giant trees in the NW, saw many spectacular waterfalls, saw a herd of elk and enjoyed good conversation.

We lost the trail in a marsh in about 2 feet of snow so that added a bit of adventure to the trek but some adversity experienced with friends is fun - if you survive!

We missed a trail junction in the snow (my fault - I was leading at the time) and got an extra couple of miles in the bargain but saw yet another waterfall we would otherwise have missed.

All-in-all, an excellent day, fine company and another fine page posted by Brian.
